Original antique American still life oil and watercolor stain with gold leaf decorative painting by American Hudson River artist Alfred Thompson Bricher, (1837-1908). Painting is on a fireplace screen made of thin gauze linen, and is estimated to have been created approximately 1890. Painting is in very good condition, with no overpainting; there was a very small tear lower left, that has been repaired. There are a couple of tears from age and stress on the linen, on reverse; which is a different layer of fabric located on reverse than the front, where the painting is located. The joint hinges have been replace. All paint is original to the painting/fireplace screen. Painting folds out into three adjoining panels, and painting continues, when open, even between the folds of the panels. Painting is the style of painting the artist may have created for aesthetic/design purposes, after the artist was appointed as an Associate member, into the National Academy of Design, in 1879. The fireplace screen painting measures 35"W X 35"H. Palette reveals key high note peach and gold tones and low dark purple contrast that prevailed in many of Alfred Bricher's striking luminist landscape paintings. Painting is signed ATB, lower right.

Alfred Thompson Bricher (April 10, 1837 – September 30, 1908) was a painter associated with White Mountain school of art painters, and the Hudson River School.

Bricher was one of the last painters of the famed Hudson River School. By the end of his life, his style of painting that included landscapes and luminism fell out of style, with Modern Art becoming the premier artistic movement.
Over time Bricher's artwork garnered more attention and by the 1980s he began to be credited as one of the nineteenth century's greatest maritime painters. A self-taught luminist, he explored the effects of light and how it reflected, refracted, and absorbed on landscapes and seascapes.
