Antique American Hudson River School Original Oil Painting of Kaaterskill Falls New York Attributed to Thomas Cole
Very old, and very gorgeous, original antique Hudson River oil painting, of Kaaterskill Falls, in upper NY, by Thomas Cole. Gorgeous, rare, museum landscape; some light overall restoration/preservation. The painting is a very old antique; on paper, attached to an old soft white, round artist's composite board, with the original label still attached on the reverse. The actual board, is very soft, (little doubt that is due to the age), and is being held into the frame on reverse, by clear tape, and linen tape, on top of the back. (Linen tape can always be removed at any time with a damp cloth). I believe the painting was, at one time, oil on paper, and the paper has been attached to the board, approximately 1845, due to the manner of the old craquelure, the paper above is old but apparent. (The cracks, before restoration, show it to have been on something, before permanently attached to the board) There are no other paints/added paintings, besides the large cracks, and a few smattering of pin dot chips, that were missing. The painting has had large cracks and has been restored of the cracks, there are a couple of minor places in rare lighting, that this is somewhat noticeable, but should be mentioned for quality assurance. (Painting was given a couple of layers of thick professional varnish to preserve the painting while restoring the appearance of/the large cracks that were present before preservation). Since the last restoration, a few cracks remain, and has been taken to the restorer to finish these last cracks in the painting; these are the most recent photos of painstaking work that has been done to preserve this painting, to the fullest. It is important to note, the up-close images of the signature were taken before restoration; these previous cracks no longer exist, as you can see by the other images. Painting may possibly need another coat, or two, of varnish, for longer-term restoration preservation, but is in fine restored condition, now. Painting is signed in more than one area, and cannot completely decipher signature/writing; painting manner, colors, and subject are attributed to the era, palette, style, and popular subject of American artist Thomas Cole. There is some writing along the bottom edge, in a very small signature, where "Cole" is evident. Thomas Cole painted many paintings that resemble this, of the Hudson, and many of this particular area, in the Catskills. When looking at this painting, and from what I know of the painting, as well as a couple of experts' opinions, it is Thomas Cole, however, this painting will have to be attributed to the school of Gifford/Cole, since the writing is a bit confusing, if it is actually to Sanford Gifford, from Thomas Cole, or the opposite. (Signatures, while a bit confusing, are original to the painting; there has been no restoration in the painting, anywhere around the signatures, and writing). Painting is annotated on reverse, as "Cascades, Catskill Mountains, N. York". This is a wonderful, rare painting of the Kaaterskill Falls, by a highly influential Hudson River Painter. Beautiful American painting; measures approximately 16" in diameter, and comes in an original 19c wood frame, (in very good condition), that is a dark charcoal/soft black color, and compliments the painting, beautifully. The painting will be double-boxed, professionally packed, (all new packing materials), and sent with insurance, and online tracking included, in the shipping quote.
