Original antique early Tonalist and Pointillist Impressionist painting of a California landscape of a lone cypress at dusk, by American artist Granville Redmond (1871-1935). The painting's subject is of an atmospheric scene at dusk at the lone cypress located on the Monterey peninsula, in Northern California, over the coastline of the Pacific Ocean. The painting's measurements sans frame are approximately 6.8" x 5.1". In frame, the entire artwork measures approximately 9.75" x 11.75". The painting's medium is an oil on canvas, attached to thick cardboard, and is in very good original condition and housed in a vintage wood frame. The painting is signed in several areas, in the front lower right corner and verso, along with notations in the lower center of the painting referring to the year of 1915, and a notation of "before dark/dusk."

Granville Richard Seymour Redmond was an American landscape painter and exponent of Tonalism and California Impressionism. He was also an occasional actor with his friend, Charlie Chaplin.

Left deaf by scarlet fever as a young child, Redmond was also an actor in silent films, where he developed a friendship with Charlie Chaplin. Redmond is celebrated for his vibrant depictions of the California landscape and his moody, atmospheric landscape scenes.

Redmond's artistic talent were discovered at the California School for the Deaf in Berkeley, California, which he attended from 1879 to 1890.

From 1893 to 1898, he studied at the Academie Julien in Paris; a private art school. A scholarship from the California School for the deaf allowed him to pursue those studies.

Granville Redmond's earlier and personally favored works were often Tonalist, featuring a darker, more muted palette of browns, golds, and olive greens. These paintings captured the quiet, contemplative moods of twilight, moonlight, and fig.

During his time in Northern California from 1910 to 1917, Redmond's style evolved toward Impressionism, incorporating brighter colors and sometimes using a pointillist technique.

His most famous works and those most favored by his patrons are hus brilliantly colorful Impressionist landscapes featuring California's rolling hills ablaze with golden poppies and blue lupine. Redmond himself lamented that the demand for his colorful poppy paintings eclipsed interest in his more introspective Tonalist work.

Granville Redmond is recognized as one of California's most important early artists, and a significant figure in American art. His work is in the permanent collections of major museums, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Laguna Art Museum, and the Oakland Museum of California. Exhibitions include a major retrospective at the Oakland Museum in 1989, and a recent touring exhibition organized by the Crocker Art Museum.
