Jan Frederik Johannes Nagtegaal Original Vintage Dutch Realism Still Life Oil Painting

Original vintage Dutch realism Old Master style and manner still life oil painting, by Amsterdam artist, Jan Frederik Johannes Nagtegaal, (1920-2000). The painting is a refined, traditional, classical realism style of painting of peaches, cherries, plums, and grapes on a layered, gray granite table. The medium oil on canvas, attached/preserved onto masonite board, and is in very good condition. There is some light crackle appearance in certain areas that appear to have been created intentionally by the artist to reflect the aesthetic of Dutch 17th century Golden Age artist's/ painter's still life works. The painting is estimated to have been created in 1970. The measurements of the still life composition are approximately 20.2" x 16.2", unframed. With frame, the entire artwork measures approximately 25.5" x 21.5". The painting is signed in the far right corner. Verso is the name "Stern", likely a prior owner or preservationist, or local Los Angeles art gallery.

    Jan Frederik Johannes Nagtegal, (1920-2000), was a Dutch painter known for his highly realistic still life and maritime paintings. His work often follows the style of the 17th century Dutch Masters.

    Nagtegaal trained in Amsterdam at the Kunstambachtsschool, the National Institute for Art Teachers, and the Institute for Applied Arts Education. He also worked as a restorer for the Rijks Museum, where he restored many Dutch Master paintings.

    Jan Nagtegaal is best known for his detailed and realistic still life compositions. His work often features fruit, flowers, and classical objects, rendered with a high- level of detail and realism. He also painted maritime subjects, including ships and harbor views. Some of his works include trompe- l'oeil elements, an artistic technique that creates the optical illusion of three-dimensionality.
