Jane Peterson Original Vintage American Impressionism Expressionist Still Life Oil Painting Hibiscus Flowers

Original vintage oil on canvas impressionist/expressionist still life painting of a bowl of hibiscus flowers in a bowl attributed to American painter Jane Peterson (1876-1965). The painting measures 23" x 28" and is estimated to have been created in approximately 1945, and there are light/fragmented notations that conform the decade. The artist's signature appears very lightly in multiple areas on the front and verso. The painting is in overall good and stable condition. Two previous small areas were restored decades prior. There are some light pressure marks from the wooden stretcher frame, a chip in the paint in the left middle portion of a hibiscis flower petal to the left, and a couple of areas of light abrasion. The images contain details of condition.

    Jane Peterson (1876-1965) was an American impressionist and expressionist painter. Her works were composed of broad swaths of vibrant colors to combine an interest in light and the depiction of spontaneous moments. She was known for her still life paintings, beach scenes along the Massachusetts coast, and scenes from her extensive travels. 

    Jane Peterson's works are in the collections of prominent museums such as the Metropolitan Muesem of Art, the Museum of the City of New York, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C., the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Philadelphia Museum of Fine Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

    Peterson was a fellow of the National Academy of Design and taught at the Art Students League from 1913 to 1919.

    During her career, Peterson was featured in over eighty one-woman exhibitions.
