Robert Falk Original 1940s Vintage Russian Avant Garde Jack of Diamonds Floral Still Life Oil Painting
Original, vintage floral still life of pansies under a blue sky oil painting on masonite board, by Russian avant- garde painter, and Jack of Diamonds group co-founder, Robert Rafailovich Falk, (1886-1958). The painting alone measures approximately 6.1" x 11.9". In frame, the entire artwork measures approximately 14.65" x 8.8". The painting is all original, in excellent condition, and signed by the artist in the upper right corner. Please review all images as supplemental to the written condition report.
Robert Rafailovich Falk was a prominent Russian and Soviet avant- garde painter, known for his work with the Jack of art group. Influenced by artists such as Paul Cezanne, Konstantin Korovin, and Valentin Serov, his style was characterized by bold colors and volumetric forms, often using layered paint techniques. He was also an educator at institutions such as VKhUTEMAS, and spent time teaching and working in Paris, before returning to the Soviet Union, where he continued to paint throughout his life.
Robert Rafailovich Falk was born in Moscow in 1886. Falk studied under artists such as Konstantin Yuon and Ilya Mashikov, before attending the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, where his teachers included Konstantin Korovin and Valentin Serov.
In 1910, Robert Falk co- founded the influential Jack of Diamonds group, which was strongly influenced by Paul Cezanne. His earlybworks featured saturated colors, angular spots, and expressive contours.
From 1918 to 1928, Falk taught at VKhUTEMAS, a state art and technical school. He also served as the dean of the Faculty of Painting.
From 1928 to 1937, Falk lived in Paris, where he was sent to study the classical heritage, and his style became more nuanced.
After returning to the Soviet Union, Falk worked at Moscow State Jewish Theater, and continued to paint. During World War II, he was evacuated and worked in places such as Samarkand and Bashkortostan.
Robert Falk passed away in Moscow on October 1, 1958.
Robert Falk was deeply influenced by French Modernism, including the Orphists, as well as painters like Van Gogh, Matisse, and Cezanne. His work is considered a crucial link between early 20th century Russian and French Modernism, and the Russian avant- garde of the 1960s.
Robert Falk's works are held in many museum collections, including major Russuan institutions, such as the Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts. Notable examples of his work are also found in the Cleveland Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Armenia, and the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life.
