After Sir Edwin Henry Landseer Original Antique 19th Century British Oil on Canvas Painting Head of a Scottish Deerhound Dog

Original antique oil painting of the head of a Scottish Deerhound, after highly- acclaimed British artist Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, (1802-1873). The painting has a new canvas liner for support during restoration and is in a newer modern frame. The painting is listed as "afyee", however, the painting is lightly but visibly signed in the lower center under the deerhound. The painting is in good condition.

 The painting is stable all over with little to no crackling, but has some puckers and may need future restorative efforts, for a more thorough preservation.

Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA was a British painter and sculptor, known for his animal paintings, especially of horses, dogs, and stags. He was born in London in 1802, and his father was the engraver John Landseer A.R.A. He was a child prodigy whose artistic talent was recognized early on, and he studied under various artists, including his father and Benjamin Robert Haydon. Landseer was associated with the Royal Academy, where he began exhibiting his work at age 13. His best-known works are the lion sculptures at the base of Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square. Landseer's paintings can be found in various places, including Tate Britain, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Kenwood House, and the Wallace Collection in London. He was famous for his animal paintings, and his reputation as an animal painter was unrivaled. Landseer's appeal crossed class boundaries, and some of his his works were common in middle-class homes. He was incredibly prolific, producing over 500 major works and an estimated 1,400 art pieces in a 50- year career. His frequent repitition of similar subjects helped him to meet the high demand for his work from both the British middle class and royalty.  He was popular with the aristocracy, and Queen Victoria commissioned numerous pet portraits from him. Landseer was particularly associated with Scotland and the Highlands, which provided the subjects for many of his important paintings.
