Thomas Sidney Moran was a British born, American painter and printmaker best known as a leading figure in the Hudson River School, best celebrated for his romantic and majestic portrayals of the American West, particularly Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, which were instrumental in the creation of Yellowstone National Park. Throughout his career, Moran also continued to paint scenes of the English and Scottish landscape, as well as Venice and Mexico. However, his artistic development was fundamentally shaped by his English birthplace and admiration for British painters.
Thomas Moran was born in the town of Bolton, Lancashire, in 1837. His parents were handloom weavers who were displaced by the industrialization of the textile industry.
The family moved to the United States in 1844, settling in Philadelphia. Moran spent most of his professional life as an American artist, but his English roots remained important to him.
A pivotal moment in Thomas Moran's career came in 1862, when he traveled back to England to study the paintings of British artist, J.M.W. Turner. Turner's dramatic, atmospheric use of color and light had a profound and lasting impact on Moran's work.
Moran was a prolific artist, creating more than 1,500 oil paintings and 800 watercolors, over his lifetime.
In the 1920's, he settled in Santa Barbara, California, where he continued to paint.
Thomas Moran passed away on August 25, 1926, at the age of 89. Today, his legacy lives on through his art and the national parks he helped create. Mount Moran in Great Teton Park is named in his honor.
