William Constable Adam (29 August 1846 – 17 October 1931) was an English born oil and watercolor painter, who spent the last three decades of his life in California. William Constable Adam was born in Tweedmouth, England, on the outskirts of Berwick-upon-Tweed, in 1846. He studied under Auguste-Joseph Delecluse, in Paris; as well as Robert Brydall and Robert Greenlees at the Glasgow School of Art. He spent some time in Buenos Aires, Argentina, before emigrating to Boston, Massachusetts, in 1893. He moved to California in the late 19th century, first settling in Monterey, in 1898, before moving to Pacific Grove, in 1906, where he lived for the rest of his life. He was known as "Professor" Adam and his work focused on the views and landscape of the Monterey area. Adam exhibited at the Del Monte Art Gallery, from 1907-1912; the Sacramento State Fairs where his work was awarded medals, Berkeley Art Association in 1908, Sorosis Club, in 1913, and the California Artist's Exhibition, at the Golden Gate Park Museum, in 1916. He was a member of the Boston Art Club and the Glasgow Art Club. He also gave art lessons in his home; a rose-covered cottage at 450 Central Avenue.

His works are in the the collections of the City of Monterey Collection, Santa Cruz City Museum, Silverado Museum in St. Helena, California; and at the Shasta State Historical Monument.

The subject of the painting is of a path, near a garden; and a house, with a rose-covered trellis. Rose-covered trellis is similar in manner to the artist's rose-covered cottage. A lovely painting, rendered delicately, with soft bright colors. A similar subject to a painting sold in April of 2012, by Bonhams, in Los Angeles.

Medium is oil on the old Academy Board and is in mint, original condition. Painting is estimated to have been painted between 1898 and 1899. (Would have been painted in Monterey, before the artist moved to Pacific Grove, California; one of the artist's earlier California works; and more desirable). The signature is degraded, and not legible; listed as an attribution to the artist. Painting has had a light professional clean, as well as a light layer of varnish, in the last year. No overpaints, crackles, or any condition issues. The original William Constable Adam oil painting is housed in an original antique frame. The original antique frame has had some restoration, and is very delicate, and may need some restoration to completely stabilize the very old carvings; at this time, is in fair condition, and displays beautifully. Measurements of the painting, alone, are approximately 9.5"X 12". In frame, the painting measures approximately 13.5"X16".
