In the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, Henderson frequently chose still-life subjects as the starting point for paintings. Max Beckmann; began his career working in the traditional style but came to be linked with Expressionism, as well as the Neue Sachlichkeit's contemporary social criticism. Known for probing the human condition in portraits, self-portraits, and enigmatic, allegorical tableaus, Beckmann initially emerged in Berlin in the early 1910s, working in a late Impressionist manner. Beckmann joined the medical corps during World War I, and served in Belgium; where he met the artist, Erich Heckel. He was discharged after a nervous breakdown, in 1915. Although he had publicly criticized Franz Marc and the Blaue Reiter’s impulse toward abstraction and spirituality in 1912, harrowing experiences of the war led him to incorporate strategies of distortion, angularity, and exaggerated color. After the war, Beckmann settled in Frankfurt but maintained ties to Berlin art circles. Focused on urban themes, especially the disaffection of postwar society, and often depicted life as a theater or circus in tightly compressed compositions, which he sometimes elaborated in portfolio format.

More than five hundred of Max Beckmann's works were removed from public collections by the Nazis, in 1937; classified by the Nazis as "degenerate art". Beckmann waited out the remainder of World War II in Amsterdam, then later assumed teaching positions in St. Louis and New York. Near the end of the artist's life, he was a also resident of Carmel, California.

Selected Bibliography
Hofmaier, James. He attended school in Connecticut and in 1928 moved to Los Angeles, where he studied at Otis Art Institute. A year later, he moved to Berkeley, where he married Lydia Newell in 1930, with whom he had two daughters. His first solo show was in 1933 at the Oakland Art Gallery. In 1943, he began teaching at the California School of Fine Arts (CSFA), now known as the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI).

David Park was one of the post-World War II alumni of the San Francisco Art Institute which was called the California School of Fine Arts (CSFA) at the time. He revived interest in figurative art, at first experimenting with still-abstracted forms that relied on color for their impact, dynamics, and warmth. Park, along with Richard Diebenkorn and Elmer Bischoff, broke away from the philosophy of painting promoted by Clyfford Still, who taught at the Institute, forming what would later be called the Bay Area Figurative Movement. Their influence may be seen in the work of later Bay Area Figurative School artists such as Paul John Wonner, Nathan Oliveira, Manuel Neri, Henry Villierme, Henrietta Berk, and Joan Brown.

Although these painters started out painting in what was called an objective style, deploying abstract shapes in large spaces, they soon migrated to using the physical world and representative subjects to experiment with shape, color, texture, and temperature in their paintings. Park realized that concentrating on principle and abstraction drew attention to the painter rather than the painting. He felt that it was important to focus on the present, to develop responses to nature. "I believe that we are living at a time that overemphasizes the need of newness, of furthering concepts".

Park worked with figurative painting from about 1950 until about 1959 when he became ill with cancer. Usually working from memory, he initially painted what he saw: kids playing in the street, musicians, his friends, people in their houses. Toward the end of the decade, he painted classical studio nudes and bathers in a monumental style. After he became too ill to work with oils, he continued working with watercolors which he produced until his early death in 1960, at the age of 49, of cancer. Tragically, he was painting his best works in the final years of his life and career.

David Park had a retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, 1988–1989.

Catalogued Comparable Works by David Park/ref:

http://mariecameronstudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Honoring-the-Legacy-of-David-Park-Phyllis-Gorsen-Metro-detail-photo-Marie-Cameron-2017.jpg

https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/sfmomamedia/media/t/collection_images/brece6ZikQpN.jpg

https://i.pinimg.com/736x/9d/38/6b/9d386b8203c13c8fca389e5475b3c566--male-figure-figure-painting.jpg

David Park
(1911-1960)
San Francisco Bay Area Figurative, Abstract Expressionist
Portrait of a Man
Signed lower right, impressed into paint; and lower left, and possibly on reverse. The abstract precisionist manner with undercurrents of flat cubism, reveals the painting to be an early painting in the precisionist school of artists that include Charles Sheeler, George Copeland Ault, Edward Hopper, Charles Demuth, and Ralston Crawford. Out of this group, the artists rendering lighthouses specifically as their (architectural) subject include: Charles Sheeler, George Copeland Ault, and Edward Hopper. The painting's provenance was in a barn, in Maine, for decades, before the latest acquisition. The flat blue sky background and clear block forms in the smaller buildings have much in common with Charles Sheeler's later works. The painting contains Charles Sheeler's palette of light mint green, with darker hunter green against blue, and sobering darker grey and brown, contrasting with highlights of the white palette. The painting's age is estimated at 1955, when Charles Sheeler vacationed in Maine, at the residence of Maine Modernist artist, John Marin.

Online Reference/Link: https://charlessheeler.org/charles-sheeler/timeline/

Jessica Murphy
Department of Modern and Contemporary Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art
November 2009"
Historical Reference, Petit Manan Island, Maine Lighthouse: http://www.newenglandlighthouses.net/uploads/1/0/7/9/10793331/9842464.jpg?465
"President James Monroe authorized the building of a lighthouse on Petit Manan Island in 1817. Moran and his family took residence in New York where he obtained work as an artist. He was a younger brother of the noted marine artist Edward Moran, with whom he shared a studio. A talented illustrator and exquisite colorist, Thomas Moran was hired as an illustrator at Scribner's Monthly. During the late 1860s, he was appointed the chief illustrator for the magazine, a position that helped him launch his career as one of the premier painters of the American landscape, in particular, the American West.

Moran along with Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Hill, and William Keith, are sometimes referred to as belonging to the Rocky Mountain School of landscape painters because of all of the Western landscapes made by this group.

Thomas Moran began his artistic career as a teenage apprentice to the Philadelphia wood-engraving firm Scattergood & Telfer. Moran found the engraving process "tedious" and spent his free time working on his watercolors. By the mid-1850s he was drawing the firm's illustrations for publication rather than carving them. At that time, he encountered illustrated books that included examples of the work of British artist J. M. W. Turner, who was to be a lasting influence on Moran's work. He also began studying with local painter James Hamilton. Moran traveled to England in 1862, to see Turner's work. From that point on, he emulated Turner's use of color, and his choice of landscapes, and was inspired by his explorations in watercolor, a medium for which Turner was particularly well-known. During the 1870s and 1880s, Moran's designs for wood-engraved illustrations appeared in major magazines and gift-oriented publications. Although he mastered multiple printing media including wood engraving, etching, and lithography, which he learned from his brothers, he received renown for his paintings in oil and watercolor. The height of his career coincided with the popularity of chromolithography, which Moran used to make color prints of his works so that they could be widely distributed. He studied art formally under Jules Garipuy at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse and while there he also studied with Eugene Delacroix. In 1879 Martin moved to Paris and worked in the studio of Jean-Paul Laurens. He received his first medal at the Paris Salon in 1883 at the age of 23 and went on to hold his first exhibition there three years later.

In the early years of his career, Martin was awarded a scholarship which took him to Italy. This journey was to have a profound effect on his artistic development. Before visiting Italy, Martin's early style was largely based upon a classical, cold, and correct technique that focused on the idealized historical characters and events popularized by the Paris Salon. In Italy however, Martin discovered the beauty of color and light, both in nature and in the works of the great masters, such as Giotto and Masaccio. Inspired by what he saw he abandoned the academic style of his earlier works and adopted a style that utilized radically short brush strokes and divided the picture into a mass of small and visible strokes. In many ways, this technique was reminiscent of the works of Georges Seurat.

Back in Paris, Martin received the gold medal at the Salon in 1889 and became a member of the Legion of Honour. He painted some unusually large pictures for the Neo-impressionists and won great acclaim when he exhibited them at a one-man show at the Mancini Gallery in 1895. Furthermore, he won the Grand Prize at the World Fair in 1900. As the prestige and popularity of Henri Martin grew, he was commissioned to paint some important murals for the city hall in Paris in 1895, and for the Capitol in Toulouse in 1903-1906. During this busy period in his career, Martin also became good friends with the sculptor Auguste Rodin.

Though a well-established and commended artist, Martin remained shy and introverted throughout his life, even refusing contracts from many successful Parisian dealers. By the turn of the century, he found that he no longer enjoyed living in Paris and began searching for an ideal home elsewhere. Eventually, he bought a mansion overlooking La Bastide du Vert, near Cahors. In this relaxed and tranquil setting, Martin began painting the countryside around his home almost exclusively and found a style and technique with which he was comfortable. The colorful and light-filled canvases he produced at this time are widely considered to be amongst his most successful works. Henri Martin's painting changed very little from this time onwards and he continued to paint the environs around his home until he died in 1943.

Ref: http://www.alonzakaim.com/artists/martin_henri/

Henri-Jean Guillaume Martin

(1860-1943)

French Impressionist

Landscape, Barn

Age is estimated at approximately 1914

Signed lower left corner. "Henri" is also visible, to the right.

Painting alone measures approximately 7 1/4" X 10 1/4"

In frame, the painting measures approximately 10" X 13"

The painting is in good overall condition. John Armstrong was born in Hastings, Sussex, the son of a clergyman; a factor which may have had an impact on his subsequent interest in religious subjects. He originally studied law, then in 1913–14 attended St John's Wood Art School. After wartime service in the Royal Field Artillery, in which his record was significantly more distinguished than that as a student, he embarked on a career as a theatre designer in London.

It was through his friendship with the actors Elsa Lanchester and Charles Laughton, that he attracted several patrons for his painting. Lillian Courtauld, the wife of Samuel *Courtauld, commissioned him to decorate a room in their home at 20 Portman Square. He held his first solo exhibition at the *Leicester Galleries in 1928 with paintings of doll-like figures that reminded the critic Anthony Bertram of the model theatre. He joined the *Unit One group in 1933; his contribution to their exhibition was a series of highly textured semi-abstract paintings in tempera, a technique that he preferred for much of his life. During this period he was one of many distinguished artists who designed posters for Shell; he also worked as a designer on films, including costumes for Rembrandt (1936). In the late 1930s, he began working on the paintings for which he is best known, precisely delineated dream-like images influenced by *Surrealism and French *Neo-Romanticism. Pro Patria (1938, Imperial War Museum, London), showing a devastated town with a peeling political poster, was his comment on the Spanish Civil War. Armstrong's pacifist convictions were apparent in much of his later work, in images like The Storm (1951), in which clowns hack at each other with swords—an allegory of the futility of war. His mother was a gifted amateur watercolorist, and Homer's first teacher. She and her son had a close relationship throughout their lives. Homer took on many of her traits, including her quiet, strong-willed, terse, sociable nature; her dry sense of humor; and her artistic talent. Homer had a happy childhood, growing up mostly in rural Cambridge, Massachusetts. His artistic talent was evident even in his early years.

In 1859, he opened a studio in the Tenth Street Studio Building in New York City, the artistic and publishing capital of the United States. Until 1863, he attended classes at the National Academy of Design and studied briefly with Frédéric Rondel, who taught him the basics of painting. In only about a year of self-training, Homer was producing excellent oil work. His mother tried to raise family funds to send him to Europe for further study but instead, Harper sent Homer to the front lines of the American Civil War (1861–1865), where he sketched battle scenes and camp life, the quiet moments as well as the chaotic ones. His initial sketches were of the camp, commanders, and army of the famous Union officer, Major General George B. McClellan, at the banks of the Potomac River in October 1861.

Homer started painting with watercolors regularly in 1873 during a summer stay in Gloucester, Massachusetts. From the beginning, his technique was natural, fluid and confident, demonstrating his innate talent for a difficult medium. His impact would be revolutionary. Here, again, the critics were puzzled at first, "A child with an ink bottle could not have done worse." Another critic said that Homer "made a sudden and desperate plunge into watercolor painting". But his watercolors proved popular and enduring, and sold more readily, improving his financial condition considerably. They varied from highly detailed ("Blackboard" – 1877) to broadly impressionistic ("Schooner at Sunset" – 1880). Some watercolors were made as preparatory sketches for oil paintings, (for example: "Breezing Up"); and some as finished works in themselves. Thereafter, he seldom traveled without paper, brushes, and water-based paints.

Throughout the 1870's, Homer continued painting mostly rural or idyllic scenes of farm life, children playing, and young adults courting, including "Country School", (1871); and "The Morning Bell", (1872). In 1875, Homer quit working as a commercial illustrator and vowed to survive on his paintings and watercolors alone. Despite his excellent critical reputation, his finances continued to remain precarious.

In 1877, Homer exhibited for the first time at the Boston Art Club with the oil painting, "An Afternoon Sun"; (owned by the Artist). Panoramic vistas and a sensual response to the light and forms of hills and valleys also characterized the paintings and watercolors, begun in 1983 after a trip to Australia, of Ayers Rock and the area around it; these works explored the common ground between Aboriginal sacred sites and Western religious and ethical beliefs. In 1992 Andrews moved back to London, and in 1994 completed The Thames at Low Tide (London, priv. col.). Delicate mastery in the soft details of the partridge, in a similar composition as many of the artist's still life paintings of game birds, signals a mature work by the master painter. Jan Fyt, (Johannes Fijt), a Flemish painter, draughtsman, and etcher, was born in March of 1611 in Antwerp, Brabant, Spanish Netherlands, (a territory which is now in Belgium]. Jan Fyt was a Flemish Baroque painter known for his technical mastery in the rendering of animals. Apprenticed to a painter when scarcely more than 10 years old, Fyt was accepted into the Guild of St. Luke as a master at age 20 and over the next 30 years produced a vast number of pictures with facility and power. His forte was the depiction of animal life in its most varied forms. One of the leading animaliers of the 17th century, he was known for his refined depictions of animals as game, and his lush hunting pieces. Jan Fyt was born in Antwerp as the son of a wealthy merchant. Fyt was baptized in March 1611, and in 1621, Fyt was registered at the Antwerp Guild of St Luke, as an apprentice of Hans van den Berghe, (also referred to as 'Jan van den Bergh'); a Dutch painter and draughtsman who had trained with Goltzius in Haarlem, and later with Rubens, in Antwerp. Fyt then likely completed his training with the leading Antwerp animal painter Frans Snyders, from 1629 to 1631. Jan Fyt became a master of the Antwerp Guild of St Luke in 1630. After setting out on a trip to Southern Europe in 1633, Fyt stopped for a while in Paris. He traveled on to Italy the following year. He worked in Venice for the prominent Sagredo and Contarini families. During his stay in Italy, he most likely visited Naples, Florence, and Genoa. He resided in Rome in 1635. Here he joined the Bentvueghels, an association of mainly Dutch and Flemish artists working in Rome. The Italian art historian Pellegrino Antonio Orlandi stated in his Abecedario Pittorico of 1704, that Fyt also spent time in Spain and London. Fyt joined the Guild of Romanists, in 1650. The Guild of Romanists was a society of notables and artists that was active in Antwerp, from the 16th to 18th century. It was a condition of membership that the member had visited Rome. In the year 1652, the Guild.Fyt’s animal still life paintings are generally more refined than those of Frans Snyders, as he catered primarily to the tastes of an aristocratic clientele. His palette was influenced by his exposure to Italian art and was more striking than that of Snyders. Fyt’s Baroque compositional style differed also from those of Snyders. Fyt was particularly skilled in the delicate rendering of the various textures of the fur and plumage of the animals he depicted. Fyt innovated the genre of the hunting piece by moving the scene in which the dead game was displayed from an indoor tabletop to an open landscape.

Jan Fyt married Françoise van de Sande on March 22nd, 1654, and the couple had four children. Weber’s abstract depictions of interiors, landscapes, and portraits, were influenced by the works of Henri Rousseau, Henri Matisse, and Paul Cézanne. “Art has a higher purpose than mere imitation of nature. It transcends the earthly and measurable,” he once mused. “It has its own scale and destiny. It is concerned with informing spirit that emanates only from spiritual and mystical realms, from the nether and the astral.” Born on April 18, 1881, in Bialystok, Russian Empire (present-day Poland), he and his family moved to Brooklyn, NY in 1891. The artist went on to study under Arthur Wesley Dow at the Pratt Institute before traveling to Paris in 1905. It was while he was in Europe that he met Rousseau, Matisse, and Pablo Picasso. Later in life, Weber became increasingly interested in Hebrew mysticism, and often depicted Jewish families and rabbis. He died on October 4, 1961 in Great Neck, NY. Today, Weber’s works are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, among others.

Ref: http://www.artnet.com/artists/max-weber-4/

Max Weber
(1881-1961)
Russian-born, Jewish American Painter
Still Life, (Maine)
Cubist, Modernist, Fauvism, Expressionism
Approximately 1914
Oil on Canvas; (Painting is on a loose canvas- presently temporarily supported by a newer, flat board, of the same approximate size)
The painting size is approximately 18.25" X 23.25".

Fauve Landscape
Cubist, Modernist, Fauvism, Expressionism
Approximately 1914
Watercolor, Gouache, Pastel, Ink Drawing/Painting, on Paper
The painting measures approximately 7 3/4" X 12", and is unframed
Signed very lightly, lower middle
Painting is part of a group of 5 paintings by Max Weber; from a farmhouse in Maine
1 of two paintings by Max Weber listed on our page
The painting is in very good, original condition. Born into a modest family, with his father Gregorio di Conte dei Vecelli and his mother Lucia, he grew up in Pieve di Cadore, a village nestled amidst the lofty peaks of the Alps. At the age of nine, he journeyed to Venice with his brother Francesco to live with their uncle and apprentice under Sebastiano Zuccato, a master of mosaics. However, it was under the tutelage of Giovanni Bellini, the preeminent Venetian painter of the time, that Titian truly flourished. His early works reflect the influence of his training and his association with another follower of Bellini, Giorgione of Castelfranco. In 1508, they collaborated on the frescoes of the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, marking a pivotal moment in Titian's career. The surviving fragments of the frescoes, particularly the Allegory of Justice attributed to Titian, offer glimpses of the idealism and physical beauty that characterized the works of both artists. Differentiating between Giorgione's and Titian's paintings from this period is challenging due to limited evidence and varying opinions among art critics. Italian writers tended to attribute a disproportionate number of works to Titian during his youth.

Titian's first independent commission was to create frescoes depicting three miracles of St. Anthony of Padua. Among these, the Miracle of the Speaking Infant showcases exceptional composition. Notably, after Giorgione's death in 1510, Titian undertook the task of adding a landscape background to Giorgione's unfinished Sleeping Venus. This fact is documented by contemporary writer Marcantonio Michiel. The landscape in Titian's Baptism of Christ (c. 1515) also bears a resemblance to the lush settings found in Giorgione's works of that time.

Contact Us:

pacificfineart@gmail.com

424-259-3290

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0101/9550/1153/files/PenitentMaryMagdaleneBibleSkullofAdamClothofHonorVenetianSchoolTitianFramed3.jpg?v=1719449365
vincent-van-gogh-vincent-willem-van-gogh-original-antique-late-19th-century-nature-morte-skull-in-profile-with-a-book-dutch-french-post-impressionist-still-life-oil-painting-circa-1885-antwerp-belgium-period
Vincent Van Gogh Original Antique 19th Century Nature Morte Skull Bible Bijbel Post Impressionist Still Life Oil Painting 1886 Antwerp Period

Vincent Willem van Gogh, (1853-1890), original antique late 19th Century Nature Morte Still Life Skull in Profile with a Book, Dutch Post Impressionist oil painting on canvas; circa 1885/6, during the artist's period in Antwerp, Belgium. The painting's measurements are approximately 13.6” X 19.8”. There has been some professional restoration to correct a tear in the center of the image; (along the top of the skull). The length can be determined by the patch, verso; (as well as the last image that is included of the painting before restoration). There is very minimal overpaint that is isolated to this area; (as well as no more than 3 tiny chips of missing paint). Other than these isolated areas, there is no overpaint, and all other paint present is original to the painting. The painting is signed to the lower right, along the bottom, and "Vincent" under the book, respectively. Verso, remnants of the signature remain along the wooden stretcher bar,(and engraved somewhat into the bars), as well as a year of either 1885/1886. The painting has some degradation of the canvas, over the years, and may need to be relined at a future date. The book in the painting is likely a bible. There are interesting initials within the binding of the book. Upon examination, the first column has a large capital, "A." The Second column from the top, along the binding, has the large capital letter "B"; (the Dutch word for the Bible is "Bijbel"). The next few initials down the binding appear to be the initial "V". The painting was completed the same year as another still life with a skeleton smoking, as well as another painting that is a still life of a bible. (There are at least a few artworks with the theme of a skull or skeleton in this period and latter periods) This painting appears to be a culmination of both subjects in his other works, (A Skull and a Bible), as well as the theme of a still life representing natural death, (Nature Morte), completed by the artist, that year. The colors are very typical of the artist, having abandoned completely somber tones, he adopts carmine, emerald, and cobalt blue. During his two-year stay in Nuenen, he completed numerous drawings and watercolors and nearly 200 oil paintings. His palette consisted mainly of somber earth tones, particularly dark brown, and showed very little sign of the vivid colors that distinguished his later work. In August his work was publicly exhibited for the first time, in the shop windows of the dealer Leurs in The Hague. In Antwerp, he applied himself to the study of color theory and spent time in museums; particularly studying the work of Peter Paul Rubens, and broadened his palette to include carmine, cobalt blue, and emerald green. Van Gogh bought Japanese ukiyo woodcuts, later incorporating elements of their style into the background of some of his paintings.

This painting bears characteristic similarities to Vincent Van Gogh's work from his Antwerp period (1885-1886), particularly his still life paintings featuring skulls and books.

Subject Matter: Van Gogh painted several still lifes with skulls, such as "Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette" (1885-1886). While in London, he developed a friendship with James McNeill Whistler, who had a noticeable influence on Lavery's artistic style.

During World War I, Lavery, like William Orpen, served as an official artist, although his ill health prevented him from traveling to the Western Front. Jackson Pollock was quoted as stating that Frederick John Schwankovsky, his instructor at Manual Arts High School, had a heavy influence on his work (Grove Dictionary of Art). The painting contains the strong palette of colors associated with Pollock"s early works, as well as his heavy brushwork with thick paint. The cubism, avant- garde Art Deco manner os apecific to his very early formative period during this year. The painting has a partially legible signature in the lower right corner, with the year 1929, and partial legible initials and writing along the lower portion of the painting. He studied in Los Angeles at the Manual Arts High School under artist and instructor, Frederick John Schwankovsky, and later moved to New York in 1930, studying under muralist Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League.

In 1929, the art featured at Manual Arts High School was a unique blend of traditional academic training and a radical introduction to European modernism. Under the leadership of Frederick John Schwankovsky, the school's art department became an incubator for experimental styles and diverse mediums. The 1929 environment was defined by a transition from conservative academic realism to avant- garde experimentation. Schwankovsky introduced his students, including Jackson Pollock and Philip Guston, to European modernism, through slides and journals like "The Arts" and "Creative Art". This included early explorations of Cubist principles and abstract forms. The 1929 yearbook for the school, "The Artisan" featured an aesthetic influenced by Art Deco, specifically a "Tahiti" theme that incorporated stylized, decorative motifs popular in the 1920s.

Pollock recieved a pivotal contract from Peggy Guggeheim in 1943, leading to his first solo exhibition and allowing him to focus on painting.
