The painting is signed with the monogram AB in the lower left corner, and ABierstadt to the right of the monogram lower right, and in the lower center, the year of what appears to be 1889.. was cleaned of old varnish and still has a small bit of darkened varnish in the sky, that could be cleaned to be perfect.

Albert Bierstadt was an influential German- American painter renowned for his grandiose, sweeping landscapes of the American West. A key figure in the Hudson River School, his large- scale, romanticized depictions played a significant role in shaping the American public's perception of the frontier, and in advocating for the designation of national parks.

Albert Bierstadt was born on January 7, 1830, in Solingen, Prussia, (now in modern Germany). His family moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts when he was two years old.

Primarily self- taught in his early years, Bierstadt returned to Germany in 1853 to pursue formal art education at the esteemed Dusseldorf Academy. There, he studied under American painters like Emanuel Leutze and Worthington Whittredge, adopting the Dusseldorf school's style, which emphasized meticulous detail and dramatic, atmospheric effects.

During his four years of study, Bierstadt traveled extensively through Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, sketching and painting landscapes.

Returning to the U.S. in 1857, Bierstadt became associated with the Hudson River School, an infirnal grouo of like- minded landscape painters, who favored detailed paintings with romantic, glowing light, sometimes called Luminism.

In 1859, a pivotal moment in his career, he joined a survey expedition, led by Colonel Frederick W. Lander, to the American West. He took photographs and made field sketches to use as references for his later large- scale studio paintings.

Albert Bierstadt's awe- inspiring depictions of the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevada captured the public's imagination and brought him immense fame and fortune. His works commanded record prices, and he was elected a member of the National Academy of Design.

Albert Bierstadt is recognized for his powerful impact on American identity and for his role in the movement for the preservation of national parks, through his majestic artworks. Bierstadt's works are well- represented in the permanent public collections of numerous museums, such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art (Ft. Worth, Texas), the Museum of Fine Art (Boston), the Art Institute of Chicago, the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco (de Young), the Brooklyn Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and many others.
