Antique 19th Century Edwin Deakin Original California Impressionism Romantic American Landscape Oil Painting Old Water Mill
Original northern California landscape oil painting with an old water mill/miner's mill, by Edwin Deakin; (May 21, 1838– May 11, 1923). Edwin Deakin was an English born, American artist, most prominently known for his paintings of an early, relatively undiscovered remote landscapes in California, and for his paintings of California Missions. Born in England, his family immigrated to the United States in Chicago, in 1856. By age 18, he was already a notable landscape and architectural artist. He first travelled to San Francisco in 1870, at the age of 32, and moved their the following year after losing nearly all his works and the family business in the Great Chicago fire in 1871. He is considered to have had an immediate impact on preservation efforts for California missions with a series of paintings he produced. In 2008, the Crocker Art Museum hosted the exhibition, "Edwin Deakin: California Painter of the Picturesque", curated by Scott Shields. It was the first comprehensive retrospective of the California artist whose oeuvre included portraits, landscapes, architectural studies, still lifes, and several complete series of works documenting the California missions, in both oil and watercolor. Edwin Deakin's paintings are in the public collections of: Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento; Oakland Museum of California; Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco - de Young; National Gallery of Art, Washington DC; Nevada Museum of Art, Hearst Art Gallery, Santa Barbara Mission Archive-Library, Cantor Arts Center, Irvine Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington DC, and the California Historical Society; as well as many other public and private collections.
A romantic and quiet scene, looks to be a mill from around the Foster's Bar/ Yuba River area. Painting measures approximately 28" X 40", without frame. Approximately 35" X 46", with frame. Estimated to have been painted approximately 1890-1900. Painting has tiny, delicate, skillful brushstrokes in the landscape, and a brilliant blue sky, peeking out from moody clouds; in stark contrast to the deep green, and aqua river tones. A beautiful painting by the artist, and very large. Painting is still housed in original, carved, antique frame. There have been no overpaints or restoration, as of yet. Signature is to the lower right side; due to the signature being very small, and partially light, the painting is listed as an attribution to Edwin Deakin. There are some minor issues. To the upper right corner, smaller than the size of a pencil eraser, is a bit of paint loss, in the sky. There were tiny holes the size of a head of a pin, from age, scattered in various parts of the painting, that have been professionally patched from reverse.
