Beautiful, original antique still life floral painting of yellow roses, attributed to Pennsylvania Victorian artist, George Lambdin, (1830-1896).

George Cochran Lambdin (1830–1896) was a renowned American Victorian artist celebrated for his exquisite floral paintings. Born on January 6, 1830, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the esteemed portrait painter James Lambdin. Lambdin's artistic journey unfolded at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, where he pursued his studies and began exhibiting his work as early as 1848.

During the tumultuous period of the American Civil War, Lambdin devoted his efforts to the United States Sanitary Commission. His compassionate nature led him to distribute vital medicines and bandages to troops in the field. It was during this time that he captured the essence of camp life through genre scenes and depicted domestic settings that often featured soldiers.

Unfortunately, Lambdin's health started to decline in his middle age, prompting him to settle in the serene Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia. It was there that he dedicated his artistic focus to the captivating beauty of flowers, with a particular fondness for painting roses. For the last 25 years of his life, Lambdin became renowned for his mastery in capturing the delicate intricacies and vibrant colors of botanical subjects. His floral paintings, especially those of roses, gained immense popularity and were widely reproduced as chromolithographs, making his art accessible to a broader audience.

Lambdin's artistic achievements were widely recognized during his lifetime. In 1868, he was elected as a member of the prestigious National Academy of Design, an esteemed honor in the art community. Additionally, he held the distinction of being an academician of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, further solidifying his prominence within the artistic circles of his time.

George Cochran Lambdin's artistic journey came to a close on January 28, 1896, when he passed away in Germantown. His legacy lives on through his breathtaking floral paintings, which continue to captivate art enthusiasts and admirers of Victorian art to this day.
