Original, vintage, California Plein Air impressionist landscape, by Arthur Frank Mathews. This painting is two of two that we have listed, by the artist. This painting is not signed; (the other painting listed by our gallery is signed, on the front). The painting could possibly be signed on reverse; the painting has not been opened from the gallery wrapping seal, like the other painting by the artist. (They both have the same framer's gallery label, on reverse) Painting is extraordinarily detailed, and shows the high key color palette of the earliest California pastel artists such as Arthur Mathews, his wife and pupil, Lucia Mathews, and Theodore Lukits. This particular painting also reflects the moody tonalism that counterbalances many of Arthur Mathew's works; along with finely detailed lighter light powder blue and pink tones.

This particular painting of the set, is not signed; (The other painting in the set is signed, and dated '38)
Painting is in good original condition, and is behind a double mat and glass, in vintage gallery frame. Vintage frame is much newer than painting; frame is estimated at 1970-1980; while painting is at 1938. There is a nick of missing pastel, a small line in the center, as well as a couple of nicks on the lower left portion, as shown. Below the longer nick, in the middle, there is/are blurry lines- 1-2 thin lines, that may have been from water, or a liquid on the surface, sometime after the painting was made; sometime before it was professionally framed. There is also a very small part, lower left, by the very edge of the painting, near the two nicks, where the paper has some irregularities, (a crease, small crack), from when the painting was attached to the board. Please review detailed images. Back of the gallery paper has not been removed; painting is still for the most part, sealed on reverse, and has not been removed from the frame.
