Arthur Mathews Original California Tonalism American Arts & Crafts Era Movement Atmospheric Landscape with Figure Antique Oil Painting
Original, vintage 1930s Arthur Frank Mathews California atmospheric tonalism oil painting on a flat wood panel of the American Arts & Crafts movement era of a landscape, with a cottage, at dusk. The painting had two long cracks along the horizon, but has since been professionally restored in that isolated area; all other paint is original to the painting; (this area can be closely examined by zooming in to the painting's images). The painting measures approximately 8.5" X 10" plus the frame, and is in the original dark bronze Arts & Crafts era, carved wood frame. The panel is signed verso, with a very large "M" inside of a painter's palette. Beautiful tonalism painting with figures in a landscape and a striking moody contrasting palette of dark green and maroon, that may have had some sentimental value to the artist.
