Original, vintage August Gay, Society of Six plain air post-impressionist painting of a Cypress near the coast; possibly in the Monterey region.
August Gay, (1890-1949), (aka Auguste Francois Pierre Gay); was born in Rabou, France in 1890. He immigrated to the U.S. with his family in 1900 settling in Alameda, California around 1901. Gay attended classes locally at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, and the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. Together with Selden Gile, Gay formed the “Society of Six” painting group, a loosely knit band of painters who shared expenses, ideas, and an appreciation of Fauvist color sensibilities. Signed in black, lower left corner, in black. The paint on the signature has degraded a bit, over the years, and is easier to see, from a couple of feet away, from the painting, as shown in the images
Estimated to have been created approximately 1932-1933
The painting is signed verso; traces of the signature remain, verso. There is also a very small stamp, running through the middle, verso.
Painting is still housed in the original, antique wood craftsman frame. The frame is in very good, original condition.
The painting is in good, original condition. There is some raising of the canvas, from when the canvas was set onto the board; which is primarily in the sky region, of the painting. Please review the images.
The painting has had no previous overpaints, or restoration.

The frame very good condition; small chip on the top of the frame, toward the back. (Unseen from the front, only top of back, and minimal).
