Original Beatrice Wood sculpture hand sculpted and glazed chalice. Stunning bright green and blue volcanic glaze, over original hand thrown pottery. Pottery is in mint, original condition. Measures approximately 9" tall, and 5" at the widest point, on the top of the chalice. Signed "BEATO", on the bottom, lightly, into the glaze. 

Beatrice Wood was an important artist in the ceramic movement in California. Settling in Ojai California, after an illustrious interlude in France With fellow artists Duchamp, and Roche'; whom the artist had a close relationship. Known as the "Mama of Dada", she was, and associated with, the most prolific artists in the 50's. Ironic, as the artist never intended to be a potter, (only after studying theater, with little success as an actress); yet was resourceful in that pottery she could make a living. Upon not finding a matching piece for a set of Baroque pottery she had, she set upon making the missing piece. She enrolled in a ceramics class at Hollywood High School, and a star in pottery was born. She lived a long life, disregarding convention; made some of the most beautiful ceramics in the world. She is highly regarded as one of the best potters in the world. Her techniques were meticulous, detailed, masterful, with a touch of rebellion.
