Bill Al Bengston Mid Century Modern Contemporary California Art Design Studio Ceramic Tapestry Pottery Mixed Media Sculpture
Bill Al Bengston, a prolific Southern California Expressionist artist, became involved in ceramics when he attended Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles. From 1953 to 1956, he studied at the Los Angeles City College, and in 1956-1957, studied at the Otis Art Institute, in Los Angeles. He was part of the group of experimental artists, whom worked with Peter Voulkos. He then worked mainly in painting, until the 1970's, when he again returned to ceramics. He participated in the "New Works in Clay By Contemporary Painters and Sculptors", exhibited at the Everson Museum of Art, in 1975. Bill Al Bengston is a colorful, local, American artist and sculptor, living in Venice, California. His art is highly distinctive due to the influence in the height of California Design and modernism, moving into a Venice studio, working with many other prolific California artists, in the 1960's; reflecting the daring work the artist is known for, and his daring life reflects.
In addition to Billie Al Bengston, others in the movement included: Ken Price, John Mason, Michael Frimkess, Henry Takemoto, Malcolm McClain, Paul Soldner, and Peter Voulkos.
Original Mid Century Modern Art, and California Modern design pottery/platter, with painted tapestry slip, and footing. Mid Century Design. Wonderful abstract expressionist painted and glazed tapestry, over studio pottery, indicates it is a very early work by the artist, when he was influenced, and working with the Mid Century Modern tapestry and ceramics artist, Bernard Kessler, at UCLA. Dark blue, light pink, and lime green painted design, on a tapestry slip, under a glossy light grayish blue glaze; over hand thrown pottery; a magnificent, well planned, and executed, work by the artist. Tapestry reflects the influence of Bernard Kessler's Mid Century tapestry design. Painting is light; beautiful, abstract expressionism, influenced by a post modern minimalism. Measures approximately 9 1/3" at the widest, by 6"; (4 leg) footing makes 1.5" height. Signed /incised under glaze, "BB3" on the bottom. Excellent original condition.
