The Gipsformerei is part of the National Museums in Berlin - Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz. The Gipsformerei is the oldest establishment of the national museums to Berlin - Prussian cultural possession and became 1819 by the Prussian king Friedrich William III, founded. The first leader was Christian Daniel Rauch , the most important classical sculptor in Prussia. Since 1891, the Gipsformerei is located in the building in Charlottenburg, in the Sophie-Charlotten-Straße / corner Spandauer Dam . Here are housed the forms, the molding workshop and the painting studios. The sales and exhibition space was opened, in 1960.
With a mold of more than 7,000 models, it is the largest of its kind, in the world. The oldest piece is the 25,000-year-old Venus of Willendorf , the largest cast is the 42 meter high Mark Aurelian column from Rome and the smallest an Egyptian scarab in fingernail size , The collection includes pieces from all epochs and from different cultures.
Many pieces have not only historical significance, but are the only witnesses of war-related or by environmental influences destroyed or impaired originals.
The Gipsformerei in Berlin has been producing gypsum continuously since 1819 - castings of important sculptures from Berlin museums and other collections.
The manufacturing methods of the Kunstmanufaktur have been handed down. The shapes are up to 200 years old. The impressions are restored if necessary. Non-contact impressions are possible with 3D scanning methods. The material consists of a special mixture of alabaster plaster. Individual parts of individual forms are cast, put together, reworked and painted. The result is a replica of a work of art. Bronze castings are also made.
