Claude Charles Buck Vintage Antique Original American Realism Chicago Avant Garde Symbolist California Fine Art Still Life Oil Painting
Very beautiful, early vintage/late antique original oil painting, by Chicago/California American artist, Claude Buck. Claude Buck is considered to be a California artist, although he had strong ties in Chicago.
The painting is in stable condition, and still in gold gild, carved wood, and antique frame. Painting has a couple of very small areas, with minor abrasion, under the vase, to the right, as shown, and to the left of the flowers; does not detract, but should be mentioned for quality assurance. (The abrasion is under the vase, near the signature, so no in painting/restoration has been performed, to not disturb the original paint where the signature is located) It is also a little loose in the upper right and left corner, and has very minor waving; this could be corrected with a re-stretch in that area. There is also a light impression line, that shows in the front, from the back stretcher bars, as shown. Due to the dark colors, these are not easily identifiable; please review the photos carefully. The painting was lightly professionally cleaned, and given varnish to help to preserve the painting. The work is strong, illuminating light, and colors; and shows Claude Buck's influence from Emil Carlsen, at an early age. This subject, and the painting itself, seem to be one of the earliest examples I have seen by the artist. The still life is simply gorgeous; a dark and moody, softly lit vase of pink and white Chrysanthemums. When looking at Claude Buck's paintings, there is often symbolism, and a direct show of influence of the other painters he worked with, in addition to his unique colors, and soft renderings. Early in Claude Bucks's career, when working with Emil Carlsen; Emil Carlsen made a smaller study-type painting that very closely resembles this subject to the point to which you could imagine both artists working together; Buck, under Carlsen's tutelage. The subject, Buck- Eye Chrysanthemums, leaves a feeling that the artist may have been smiling, a bit, at the symbolism.
The measurements of the painting, alone, are approximately 21"X17". The painting's measurements with frame, are approximately 27.3"X24".
The frame is in good stable condition; there were a couple of minor issues in which the frame has been restored. The original antique frame is very heavy, solid carved wood, and gold gild, and complements the painting, very well. It is a layered frame, of two frames, converged into one; which was common in this era. Along the back edge, which is not visible while hanging, unless looking at the back, there are a few teeth that are missing. Due to the restoration on the frame, this is not noticeable but should be mentioned, for quality assurance. (Listing is for painting alone, but out of courtesy, frame is included). Painting is a very early painting by the artist; with the nailed canvas to the stretcher frame. Estimated at approximately 1905, and no later than 1910. Right at the time that the young artist was taking classes from Emil Carlsen, at the National Academy of Design, at the time his teacher, Carlsen painted a very similar painting, with an identical subject:(to the detail of fallen petals of the same flowers/same colors/same background, only smaller). (This painting by Carlsen is well cataloged). The painting is lovely; the dark hues of black, brown, and dark red in the background, contrasted with the soft reddish lighting, around the still life. It is a wonderful painting; showcasing the artist's flawless painting technique. Smooth lines of realism, into a soft impressionist of flowers. A highly distinguishable technique that very few artists were capable of. (Carlsen, learning this from the French School; and, subsequently, Buck, from Carlsen). The painting will be packed professionally, and sent with online tracking, and insurance, included in the shipping quote.
