Beautiful glazed and decorated, original vintage expressionist stoneware sculpture by David Shaner. Work is a nice early example by the artist; influenced by the work the artist witnessed on his travels to Peru. Signed and dated '75, on the bottom; a time when David Shaner was working at, and was the director of, the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts. Affectionately coined, "The Bray"; it is a non-profit, public educational institution located in Helena, Montana.
The artist residency program has always been the core of the foundation. Some highly regarded artist residents included: Robert Archambeau, Peter Voulkos, Rudy Autio, as well as David Shaner. There is a lovely correlation between these expressionist artists, and their highly unique work in sculpture, modernist pottery, and stoneware.
Not only a master of pottery, but an avid collector; (pottery surrounded him in his home; even part of the floor was made of clay), David Shaner was concerned with every dynamic of the pottery he created, as witnessed in this extraordinary work of art, the artist's career spanned over four decades. He is one of the highest regarded artists in the American Studio art pottery movement.
This sculpture: a very beautiful, wood fired, glazed, and decorated stoneware sculpture, by master expressionist sculptor, and ceramist, David Shaner, (1934- 2002). Sculpture is very beautiful, extraordinarily unique. It is in near mint original condition. (There is what may be a very small, thin chip on the inside of the rim, inside the very top). It is possible this is an inherent, original characteristic of the glazing process; it is not apparent. It is signed, and dated, '75, on the bottom. Wonderful pot markings of black, (an effect of the woodfire process that, in addition to his innovations in organic forms, made David Shaner's work so distinctive). The sculpture has an abstract vase/vessel shape, which sits perfectly, looks different, from every angle. Horizontal striations, and a wonderful expressionist decorative face, on tan/camel glazed stoneware. The vase is approximately 11" high, with 6" approximation, at it's widest, through the middle. The stoneware vase has a wonderful multicolor, subtle structural horizontal striations, and a very striking modernist expressionist design in the middle; boasting strong work; revealing the artist as a true artisan of form, color, and architectural composition. Highly concerned with ceramic anatomy, the work holds a highly meticulous technique, masterful in all aspects. There is a gorgeous top, in a light lavender, that is surrounded in a gold trim paint, that wonderfully sets of the light brown, dark brown, and stone grey. Hand painted decoration in the middle displays the artist's influence from the decorations of Peruvian potters. Vase will be packed professionally, and sent with insurance, online tracking, and signature confirmation, included in shipping quote.
