Eastman Jonathan Johnson Original Antique American 19th Century New York Realism Genre Portrait in Landscape Fine Art Oil Painting
Original antique 19th-century oil painting of a little girl who appears to possibly be holding and possibly tossing seeds from her apron onto the foreground; with hills and mountainous region of upper New York in the background. Round white primed board is stamped on reverse "Devoe & Co" a triangular trademark symbol, and "New York", as well as other illegible words in the board maker's stamp. Painting is in the New York realism manner prevalent in New York among American artists at this time; specifically artists that were also lithographers, and one in particular with striking similar colors and details down to the angle of the little shoes of his portraits of children, Eastman Johnson. From the little girls clothes, bonnet and shoes, estimated date is approximately 1880-1885.
The painting measures 9 3/4" around, plus an antique frame, which also still contains antique glass. (Glass will be removed before shipping, to prevent damage)
Eastman Johnson (July 29, 1824 – April 5, 1906) was an American painter and co-founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; his name was inscribed at its entrance. He was best known for his genre paintings, paintings of scenes from everyday life, and his portraits both of everyday people and prominent Americans such as Abraham Lincoln, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. His later works often show the influence of the 17th-century Dutch masters, whom he studied in The Hague in the 1850s; he was known as The American Rembrandt in his day.

Painting is lightly secured in frame but will need a more professional securing into the frame.
There is some handwriting on the reverse, which does not appear to be/unconfirmed to be original to the painting at creation as the ink appears newer/more modern, stating: "Morning in the Mountains", and the year 1883, with someone's name.
Condition: The painting was previously cleaned of old darkened varnish which was very thick across the painting. When the painting was cleaned a crack was evident to the left of the little girl's face. This crack has been professionally restored, as well. The painting is in very good condition; has been restored of two cracks; one is below the right foot of the little girl to the edge, and one to the left of the little girl's face. The painting has light initials, lower right, under the little girl's booted foot, original to the painting, "EJ". Due to the lightness of the signature, and difficulty to read, the painting is listed in the manner of Eastman Jonathan Johnson.
