Beautiful, and very rare, early vintage plein air oil painting on board, by early Pasadena, California artist, Frank Tolles Chamberlin, (Chamberlain), (1873-1961). The painting is in very good condition; there has been some restoration in the sky, (to correct a few spots, and a minor crack), and a light cleaning. All other paint is original. The painting is monogrammed by the artist in the lower right corner, and dated '39. The approximate measurements of just the painting, are 24"X15.5"; a few inches larger, than the original frame. The painting is still sealed in the original vintage frame; the frame has no obvious flaws, and is in very good condition, as well. Beautiful rose, and sandy terra cotta clay-colored sunset, wonderful depth of landscape, detail, focal to the background, lovely evening shading.

The painting is a lovely early California Plein Air landscape painting, with a portrait of the artist's wife, and daughter; (Katherine and Dorothy). The painting's color has a very warm quality, not unlike the light captured by many Taos artists, over the desert. The detail in the painting, the layering of colors, for light effect, is spectacular. The shading of the early evening light. The depth and perspective of the subjects, versus the background of the cliffs, and ocean; trees appear in movement from the wind. I have seen many examples by the artist, however, I have never seen a better example by the artist, in terms of his talent. Everything about the painting shows an outstanding grasp of California Plein Air painting traditions. Truly a glorious oil painting by Chamberlin; a rare collector's piece. The painting was taken in a few different lights; the first few images have the truest colors to the original. The painting comes in the original 1939 frame, as well.
