"Dutch Artist Lauds Desert
After traveling about in the most scenic portions of the West for the past month and a half, George Van Saake, noted Dutch artist, was free in his praise this week of Palm Springs and the desert country as perhaps most beautiful of all. Van Saake comes from Detroit and has been traveling by trailer on his extensive sketching trip. He has attained considerable note as a portrait painter in recent years. Formerly he was recognized as one of the leading restorers of paintings in the world. Such famous subjects as Andrew Mellon, Marlene Dietrich, Goeta Ljunbcrg, Swedish prima donna; Carmen Castilla, wife of Vavier Cugat, have been placed on canvas by him. He was one of the three men permitted by Edsel Ford to make industrial paintings in the Ft. Dearborn plant. Famed Painting One of Van Saake’s most famous paintings is his American "Blue Boy.” For the last ten years, he has been painting. Before that, he restored such great paintings as that of Eugene, the illegal son of Napoleon, and paintings of Laurence. He was the restorer and and an advisor for the Louisiana State Museum of New Orleans, for some time. Van Saake is planning to spend about ten days in Palm Springs and may exhibit locally. Stendahl’s Gallery in Los Angeles will exhibit his work within three or four weeks, he says. Coming here from Santa Monica, he will travel on to El Paso after Palm Springs, and then to Detroit."
