Original, vintage Guy Orlando Rose, California plein air and Giverny Colony Impressionistpainting of the iconic Lone Cypress along 17-mile drive in Pebble Beach, near Monterey and Carmel. The painting is an oil on board, and measures 7" X 10". In frame, the artwork measures approximately 8.75" X 11.75". The painting is signed in the lower left corner, and dated what appears to be 1915. The painting remains housed in the original vintage era frame circa 1930s. The painting and the original antique frame are in very good original condition.
Guy Orlando Rose, (1867-1925), was a preeminent American Impressionist painter, widely recognized as the most influential figure in the California plein air movement.
Born on March 3, 1867 in San Gabriel, California, Guy Rose achieved massive national acclaim during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Over his prolific career, he bridged the gap between French Impressionism and the rugged landscapes of the American West.
From a prominent family, Guy Rose was the seventh child of California Senator Leonard John Rose. He was raised on an expansive ranch and vineyard in San Gabriel Valley, on a property that eventually becamethe namesake for the town of Rosemead, California.
In 1876, Rose had an accident while hunting that left his face severely injured. During the long recovery period, Rose began sketching, utilizing watercolors, and experimenting with oils to pass the time.
After graduating from Los Angeles High School in 1884, Rose formally studied art at the California School of Design, under Virgil Williams and Emil Carlsen.
In 1888, Guy Rose moved to France and enrolled at the famed Academie Julian, studying under masters Benjamin Constant and Jean- Paul Laurens.
Returning to France in 1899 with his wife Ethyl, the couple eventually bought a cottage in Giverny. There, Rose became a close friend of Claude Monet, whose vibrant, sun- drenched style fundamentally transformed Rose's work.
During the 1890s. Rose briefly lived in New York City, working as an illustrator for prestige publications such as "Harper's", "Scribners", and "Century".
Rose permanently moved back to Southern California in 1914, capturing the distinct coastal atmosphere of Carmel, Monterey, and Laguna Beach.
Guy Rose served as the Director and teacher at the Stickney Memorial School of Art in Pasadena, shaping the next generation of West Coast painters.
In 1921, Rose suffered from a a debilitating stroke that effectively ended his painting career. He passed away four years later in Pasadena, on November 17, 1925, at the age of 58.
Paintings by Guy Orlando Rose are permanently preserved in several prominent art institutions, predominantly across California, where he spent his later years capturing the West Coast light, including the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, LACMA in Los Angeles, the Laguna Art Museum in Laguna , the San Diego Museum of Art, the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, and the Oakland Museum of California. The Cleveland Museum of Art is one of the few major institutions outside of California to hold Rose's prestigious French landscape works.
