Original vintage California impressionism landscape oil painting, by Hanson Duvall Puthuff (1875-1972). The oil painting on canvas is in very good to excellent original condition, with no previous harsh cleanings nor restorative overpaints. The painting is in the original frame, which does have some scraping of the paint, as evidenced in images.

Hanson Duvall Puthuff, born on August 21, 1875, in Waverly, Missouri, was a renowned landscape painter and muralist. He began his artistic education at the Art Institute of Chicago before relocating to Colorado in 1889 to attend the University of Denver Art School. In 1903, Puthuff journeyed to Los Angeles, where he spent 23 years working as a commercial artist, painting billboards while pursuing his passion for landscape painting during his free time. In 1926, he made the decision to abandon commercial art and fully devote himself to fine art and exhibitions. Notably, he gained national recognition for his evocative depictions of the Southern California deserts. Puthuff passed away in Corona del Mar on May 12, 1972.

Puthuff played a pivotal role as one of the co-founders of both the California Art Club and the Laguna Beach Art Association. Throughout his career, he earned several accolades, including awards from the Alaska–Yukon–Pacific Exposition in 1909, a bronze medal at the Paris Salon in 1914, and two silver medals from the Panama-California Exposition in 1915. His works can be found on display in prominent institutions such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Laguna Art Museum, and Bowers Museum. Additionally, many of his artworks are documented in the art inventory of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

In 2007, the Pasadena Museum of California Art hosted the notable exhibition "California Colors: Hanson Puthuff," marking the artist's first solo museum exhibition. The museum also republished his autobiography in conjunction with the exhibition, offering further insights into his life and artistic journey.

The painting measures approximately 16" X 20", plus frame. 20" X 24" in total (with the frame).

Signed lower right, in black crayon, and signed lower left in the paint, and in the middle, in small lettering.

Very good condition. The painting remains housed in the original vintage frame. Estimated to be a later work of the artist.
