Original Belgian impressionist antique painting of a shepherd with his flock of sheep; walking down a path, beside a river, by Felix Sater, (1881-1963). There is a village in the background, and a beautiful soft sweeping tree, to the right.

Felix Alois Sauter, a Belgian artist, specialized in creating vibrant and impressionistic landscapes. Born in Antwerp, Sauter found inspiration in the picturesque countryside surrounding the city. His body of work prominently features scenes such as a mill at Lillo on the river Scheldt, as well as the heathland and woods of the Kalmthout area.

Sauter's paintings display a spontaneous and plein-air approach. With bold and broad brushstrokes, he applied thick layers of paint to the canvas, evoking atmosphere through texture and emotion. His skilled use of color captures the diverse moods of the Belgian countryside. Muted blues and melancholy greys convey the impending rainclouds, while delicate touches of lavender and magenta depict heathland flowers amidst saffron and dirty umber earth tones.

It appears that Sauter drew inspiration from the artistic developments taking place in neighboring France, particularly the rise of the Impressionists and their emotional response to nature. In Belgium, he actively participated in the artistic progress of the time, becoming a member of the art group called "Labour." In 1906, Sauter exhibited his work alongside other members of the group at the Modern Museum in Brussels. "Labour" was known for embracing artistic diversity, with each artist bringing their unique vision to the group. This emphasis on modernity and freedom of expression defined their approach.

While there is limited information available about Felix Alois Sauter's life, his vivid and evocative landscapes speak volumes about an artist deeply fascinated by his homeland. Through his passionate and impressionistic works, he celebrated the beauty of the Belgian landscape.
