Nocturnal Seascape, (Spanish ships, with cannons- possibly Christopher Columbus’ Voyage to the Americas)
The painting alone measures approximately 10.5” X 21.5”, plus the frame.
Age is estimated at approximately 1884. The years 188-1885 are the patent years engraved into the old, metal seam ties, on the reverse of the painting’s wooden stretcher bars, (Feb 1883 June 1885); (please review images). (Painting also has a striking similarity to Newell Convers Wyeth, (a contemporary), but is much too old to be by Wyeth)
The painting is still housed, in the original frame. The outer part of the frame is long since corroded and has been removed from the inner gold frame. The inner gold frame still has a few nails sticking out that were attached to the outer frame, which was removed; (be very careful, when handling). The inner part of the frame is in good stable condition.
Painting is still nailed into the old, original stretcher bars. Verso of the old stretcher, upper left, is the monogram “HP”
The painting has been cleaned of old varnish and has been revarnished in the last 5 years. All other paint is original to the painting; there have been no overpaints. The paint is in very good and stable condition, and the colors are brilliant, due to the cleaning. There are a couple of very small areas, (one less than 1/10th of an inch), that may have tiny scratches or abrasions; (Two have been found: one, upper right, and in the moon/clouds there is a very small dent, with abrasion, a little smaller than the size of a pencil eraser; mentioned for quality assurance). Please review the images.
