Hugo Melville Fisher, (1878-1946), was born in Brooklyn, New York; and first studied painting under his father, the noted landscape painter, Hugo Anton Fisher. Shortly after the turn of the century, Hugo Melville Fisher moved to Paris, where he furthered his studies under Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant, and later, with William Bouguereau, and James Whistler. He exhibited widely and with great success, both in Paris with Durand-Ruel, and in London at the Royal Academy. Fisher spent sixteen years in Europe before returning to the United States where he settled in New York. Recognized as a sophisticated proponent of Modernism, he exhibited and won prizes throughout the country including at the California State Fair (1891), Babcock Gallery NYC (1921), Ainslie Galleries NYC (1921-25). Hugo Melville Fisher’s work may be found in the permanent collections of American museums nationwide and is highly sought-after at auction. Although widely-considered a California painter, Fisher traveled constantly and painted many scenes on the East Coast and the southern United States.
