Original antique painting of schooners at a sunset anchor, in the manner of Irving Ramsey Wiles. Estimated to have been created in approximately 1893, when Irving Wiles exhibited at the Columbian Exposition.

In the first quarter of the twentieth century, Irving Ramsey Wiles was one of the most successful portrait painters in the United States. Born in Utica, New York, Irving first studied with his father, Lemuel Maynard Wiles, who enjoyed moderate success as a landscape painter. Irving Wiles then attended the Art Students League in New York City, where his teacher was William Merritt Chase. During a sojourn in Paris, Wiles then studied at the Académie Julian and also with the portrait painter Carolus-Duran (who was John Singer Sargent's teacher).

Returning to New York in 1884, Wiles maintained a studio and also taught painting at the Art Students League and the Chase School, in addition to drawing illustrations for magazines such as Harper's and Scribner's. He catapulted to art stardom in 1902 when his portrait of the famous actress Julia Marlowe was exhibited at the National Academy of Design. Lauded for his dazzling brushwork and ability to capture the likeness of the subject, Wiles became the artist of choice for a socially prominent clientele, as well as important businessmen and political figures. Among his sitters were William Jennings Bryan and Theodore Roosevelt.

In 1915, Wiles was awarded a gold medal at the Panama Pacific Exposition. He continued to exhibit and win awards for his work during the next several decades.

(1861-1948)
Schooners at Sunset/Anchor
The actual painting canvas measures 7" X 4". Painting measurements are larger on the card and in the frame.
Oil on a piece of canvas, backed by/attached to an exposition cabinet card. (*Card possibly from World's Columbian Exposition where Irving Wiles Exhibited, in 1893)
There is a small area on the reverse where the "W" may be visible from the signature "Wiles", in graphite that has worn over the years. The identification marks are difficult to locate/confirm. Therefore, painting is listed in the manner of American painter, Irving Ramsey Wiles.
The painting is behind a newer dark blue navy suede mat, and in an antique carved wood Eastman Frame with gold trim, circa 1890.
Condition: The painting is in overall good and stable condition. There is a very small flake of missing paint on one of the sails, and various small chips on the very border of the edges of the canvas of painting, as shown. The painting is original with little to no evidence of previous overpaints, restorations, or cleanings. Please review all images.
