Antique 19th century, rare hand- signed and titled "Lime Houses" drypoint etching print by American born Aesthetic Movement impressionist painter and innovative printmaker, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, (1834-1903).  The drypoint etching "Lime Houses" depicts a bustling harbor area of Limehouse in East London, an entrance to the West Indies Docks, and was created in 1859, as part of Whistler's "Thames Set" of etchings. The medium used is a drypoint etching on paper. The etching is hand- signed in the lower right corner, in graphite, below the plate, and hand-titled in the lower left corner, below the plate, also in graphite. The etching inside the plate measures approximately 5" x 8", (precisely 5" x 7 7/8"); (12.7 x 20.32 cm). The entire paper measures approximately 9.5" x 6.5".The etching remains housed in the original antique black wood frame, behind the original antique mat. The antique mat has darkened, due to age. The etching has a couple of areas of damage in the top and lower left, and minor pressure marks in the lower center portion of the print. Please review all of the detailed images as supplemental to this written condition report, for quality assurance.

James Abbott McNeill Whistler was a pioneering American born painter in oils and watercolors,  as well as an innovative printmaker, active in the American Gilded Age, although he was primarily active in the United Kingdom. Whistler was a key figure in the Aesthetic Movement, and this piece exemplifies his mastery of line and tonal variatioon, transforming an industrial scene into a poetic study of light and shadow.

James Whistler was a tireless experimenter known for his innovative approach to etching, producing a large body of work in the medium. His etchings are known for their summary style, abbreviated forms, and ability to rendee effects of light and atmosphere.  Whistler often created multiple "states", (changes to the printing plate), for a single image, sometimes as many as twenty.

James Abbott McNeill Whistler's focus on the abstract qualities of paint, and his innovative etchings of London and Venice made him a critical bridge between 19th century realism and 20th century art.
