Jane Peterson was a prominent American artist recognized for her vibrant and dynamic paintings that skillfully blend elements of Impressionism and Expressionism.
Peterson's work is characterized by the use of broad, loose brushstrokes and a bold palette of colors, conveying a sense of immediacy and spontaneity.
Peterson studied under several European artists, notably Joaquin Sorolla in Madrid, whose guidance significantly impacted her use of color and light. Her style can be considered a blend of Impressionist and Expressionist techniques. She was also influenced by other art movements such as the French Nabi, Fauvism, and Art Nouveau.
Jane Peterson's paintings often depict floral still lifes, captivating landscapes, and scenes from her extensive travels, including the vibrant Venetian Canals, the lively city streets of Istanbul, colorful Massachusetts harbor scenes, and Orientalist themes.
Peterson's work was widely exhibited in solo and group exhibitions. She was recognized in the American Historical Society in 1938 as the "most outstanding individual of the year". Peterson's paintings are held in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum. In her later years, she focused on still life paintings, as arthritis limited her painting in the mid 1950s.
