Jane Peterson, an American Impressionist and Expressionist painter, is known for her vibrant use of colors and her ability to capture spontaneous moments. Born in Elgin, Illinois, on November 28, 1876, Peterson changed her name from Jennie Christine to Jane right after graduating from high school in 1894. Despite not receiving formal art training as a child, she developed a passion for painting.

In 1895, Peterson attended the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, after learning about it at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. She studied there and borrowed money from her mother to pursue her art education. Later, she continued her studies in oil and watercolor painting at the Art Students League in New York City under the guidance of Frank DuMond.

Peterson's artistic journey took her to Europe, where she studied under renowned artists such as Frank Brangwyn, Joaquin Sorolla, Jacques Blanche, and Andre L'Hote. In Paris, she became acquainted with Gertrude Stein and Leo Stein, forming connections with influential figures in the art world. Peterson's exposure to Fauvism, Expressionism, Impressionism, and the beginnings of Cubism during her time in Paris greatly influenced her style.

Throughout her life, Peterson traveled extensively and painted a wide range of subjects, including still life paintings, portraits, beach scenes along the Massachusetts coast, and scenes from her travels abroad. Her works are displayed in prestigious museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of the City of New York, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C., the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

In addition to her artistic pursuits, Peterson held various professional positions. She served as a supervisor of drawing in Elmira, New York, and Boston, Massachusetts. She taught watercolor at the Art Students League and became the Drawing Supervisor of the Brooklyn Public Schools. Peterson also authored a book on flower painting and exhibited her floral paintings at the Newhouse Galleries in New York.

In 1925, Peterson married M. Bernard Philipp, a corporate lawyer. Following her marriage, she spent summers in Ipswich, Massachusetts, and traveled less frequently. After her husband's passing, she married James S. McCarty in 1939, but the marriage was short-lived. Peterson passed away on August 14, 1965, while traveling to join a niece in Kansas.

Throughout her career, Peterson participated in numerous exhibitions and had over 80 one-woman shows. Her style encompassed influences from Impressionism, Neo- and Post-Impressionism, Art Nouveau, Nabi, and Fauvism. Her works depicted a variety of subjects, and she even contributed to the war effort during World War I by painting military portraits and scenes of Red Cross activities.

Some of Peterson's notable works include "Parade" and "Turkish Fountain with Garden," which are held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She received recognition for her artistic achievements, including being selected as the most outstanding individual of the Year by the American Historical Society in 1938. Her works were featured in exhibitions such as "Jane Peterson: At Home and Abroad" in 2018, showcased at the Columbia Museum of Art, the Mattatuck Museum, the Long Island Museum of Art, and the Hyde Collection.
