Original, antique American Orientalism Allegorical portrait in a panoramic Capri/Italian landscape, by American artist, Henry Siddons Mowbray, (1858-1928).

Mowbray's artistic journey began with a year at the United States Military Academy at West Point before he ventured to Paris in 1879 to study under the renowned Leon Bonnat. His debut artwork, "Aladdin," quickly garnered attention and propelled him into the public eye. Under Bonnat's tutelage, Mowbray honed his skills until 1883. Recognized for his talent, he was welcomed as a member of the Society of American Artists in 1886, and his painting "Evening Breeze" earned him the esteemed Clark Prize at the National Academy of Design in 1888. Subsequently, he achieved associate membership in the Academy and ultimately attained full membership in 1891.

Mowbray's legacy largely rests on his decorative creations, exemplified by remarkable works such as "The Transmission of the Law" in the Appellate Court House and the ceilings in notable locations like F.W. Vanderbilt's residence, J.P. Morgan's Library, and The Morgan Library & Museum's Annex building. In addition, he adorned the library of the University Club in New York City with intricate murals on both the ceiling and walls, completing this masterpiece in Rome during his tenure as the director of the American Academy from 1902 to 1904.

During his illustrious career, Mowbray's artistic prowess extended beyond his personal endeavors. He shared his expertise as a respected teacher at the Art Students League of New York around 1901. His influence also extended to the realm of public service, where he contributed as a member of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts from 1921 until his passing in 1928.

Among the many artists touched by Mowbray's guidance were Mortimer Lichtenauer, Florence Wolf Gotthold, and Clara Taggart MacChesney, all of whom went on to make significant contributions to the art world.

The oil painting measures approximately 39"L X 20"H

Painting is signed on the upper part of the canvas, which is held by nails, in several areas. There is a stamped, left signature, in the middle, there are initials, and to the right; all isolated to the top of the painting/overlap over the wooden stretcher bar, next to the nails, holding the canvas. On the reverse, there are a couple of lighter areas of the signature. On the right edge, on the canvas overlap there is a year, but is very difficult to read; please review.

The painting has been recently cleaned, within the last 5 years. There is a mark to the lower left, that is small but may need some correction. There is also a longer mark, with light abrasion, on the lower right, as shown. There have been no previous restorative/added overpaints. Please review all images.
