Please review all images as supplemental to written condition report for quality assurance. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e    Lawton Silas Parker was an American Impressionist painter known for his figure studies, landscapes, and portraits. He was famously the first American artist to win the gold medal at the Paris Salon, in 1913.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e    Born in Fairfield, Michigan, Lawton Parker moved to Nebraska as a child and began his art training at the Art Institute of Chicago, in 1866. In 1888, he moved to Paris for further study.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e    In Paris, Parker studied at the Academie Julian with artists such as William- Adolphe Bouguereau, and while studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, he studied painting under Jean- Leon Gerome and James McNeill Whistler. After returning to the U.S., he taught at St. Louis School of Fine Art, served as the director of Beltoit College, and was president of the New York School of Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e    Lawton Parker spent much of the 1920s and 1930s in France, living at his Chateau d' Andecy, near Paris. While originally an academic portraitist, Parker adopted an Impressionist style and began working en-plein air, (outdoors), after becoming associated with the Giverny art colony in the early 1900s. He worked alongside other impressionists, including Frederick Frieseke and Guy Rose. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e    In 1913, his figure painting was awarded a gold medal at the Paris Salon, a groundbreaking achuevement for an American artist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e    Parker's paintings often depict figures, particukarly nudes, set in sun- dappled gardens and landscapes. His work was praised for its luminous color and treatment of light. While critically successful, some of hus nudes were cintroversial in more conservative venues like the Art Institute of Chicago, which led him to move his American studio to New York, around 1916. He was also instrumental in the construction of the Rodin Studio Building for artists, in New York.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e    Following the German occupation of France suring World War II, Lawton Parker and his family were forced to flee in 1942, escaping Spain with the help of the French Underground. He was forced to abandon many of his works, and his chateau was later destroyed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e    In his final years, Parker settled in Pasadena, California. An exhibition of his work was held there in 1945.
