Lucian Michael Freud was a renowned British painter and draughtsman known for his figurative art and considered one of the leading English portraitists of the 20th century. He was born in Berlin on 8 December 1922 to Lucie and Ernst L. Freud. His mother named him "Lucian" in honor of the ancient writer Lucian of Samosata. In 1933, Freud's family moved to England to escape the rise of Nazism, and he became a British citizen in 1939. Freud attended various art schools and served in the British Merchant Navy during World War II.
Initially influenced by surrealism, Freud's early career as a painter transitioned towards realism in the 1950s. His paintings often depicted friends and family members in somber settings, characterized by psychological depth and thickly textured brushwork. Freud was known for his intense privacy and demanding painting process, which involved extended and rigorous sittings with his models.
Freud's art gained recognition internationally and was associated with the "School of London," a group of figurative artists working in London during the same period. In 2015, another painting titled "Benefits Supervisor Resting" fetched a staggering $56 million at auction.
Despite his financial success, Freud remained dedicated to his artistic vision and continued to paint with great intensity and precision. The painting is housed in the original vintage frame. Verso of painting has a stamp of the canvas manufacturer; Viktoria Maltuch.
A rectangular stamp resembles an estate stamp but is very difficult to read/nearly illegible. There is also some other misc writing, on the reverse, as shown in the images.
The painting is in excellent, original condition; with no overpaints, or restorations. All paint is original to the painting. Please review all images.
