The painting alone measures approximately 20" X 25". In frame, the entire artwork measures approximately 21.75" X 27.50". The painting is dated 1938 in the lower right portion of the painting. This date is consistent with the apparent age of the painting, and when Alvarez painted still life paintings that had modernism structure with elements of impressionism, incorporating references from her stay in Hawaii. The painting is in overall good condition. There were minor areas of missing paint- chips and areas of light to moderate abrasion along the bottom edge that have since been lightlyrestored. The first few images in the carousel reflect the post restoration results. There are several areas containing the artist's signature, including along the lower wooden stretcher bar, verso of the painting. Additionally, the vintage paper gallery seal and framer's label remains verso of the painting.

Mabel Alvarez was an American painter. Her works are often introspective and spiritual in nature, and her style is considered a contributing factor to the Southern California Modernism and California Impressionism Movements.

Alvarez demonstrated artistic talent at a young age, and in 1915 enrolled in the Art Students League of Los Angeles, where she enjoyed immediate success. She painted a large mural for the Panama-California Exposition San Diego, for which she won a Gold Medal. Alvarez attended William Cahill's School for Illustration and Painting in Los Angeles and drew a charcoal portrait of a woman in profile, used by the school for its catalog cover.

Her first painting was displayed at the Los Angeles Museum, (now the Los Angeles County Museum of Art), in 1917, a museum with which she continued to maintain a close relationship with until her death.

As a young woman, Alvarez was influenced by the philosophical writings of William Levington Comfort, who espoused principles of Theosophy and Eastern Mysticism.

At an exhibition in 1919, Alvarez won third prize for her rendering of a child's head entitled, "Carmen." In 1923, she won a prize for best figure painting in her work "Self Portrait" in the spring exhibition at The Los Angeles Museum.

In the 1920s and 1930s, her works were heavily influenced by the Synchromism Movement's Stantin Macdinald-Wright and Morgan Russell, who would remain her teacher for over twenty years. These early paintings were based on her interest in Symbolism, Art Nouveau, and Impressionism.

In 1922, Alvarez became a member of The Group of Eight, along with Clarence Hinkle, Henri De Kruif, John Hubbard Rich, Donna Schuster, Luvena Buchanon Vysekal, and Edouard Vysekal. This group was the basis for the Progressive Art Movement in California.

In August of 1941, Alvarez had a one-woman exhibition in the Los Angeles County Museum tgat featured paintings of bold color she created while staying in Honolulu. There was evidence of her sray in Hawaii because many of her paintings featured different aspects one would find in usland life such as the style of dress, food, and plants. Specifically, one of the features of this exhibit was a large still life that depicted fruit on a table.

Mabel Alvarez painted into her sixties and seventies. Her works included impressionism, as well as figurative, still life, and portrait paintings. Her late pieces focus on religious and symbolic themes.

Notable collections are held in the collections of Honolulu Museum of Art and the San Diego Museum of Art.

Contact Us:

Pacificfineart@gmail.com

424-259-3290

https://pacific-fine-art.com/products/mabel-alvarez-original-vintage-group-of-eight-california-modernism-still-life-oil-painting
