Original, vintage 1949 photo montage, (collage), by American born avant- garde Surrealist and Dadaist movement artist, painter, photographer, and filmmaker, Man Ray, (1890-1976). The photo montage is an assemblage with personal photographs taken from his photography session shoots with his girlfriend and muse, Lee Miller, (represented as the red lips in the montage), as well as photos the artist took while working as a fashion photographer for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar magazine publications. The photo montage has the artist's signature incorporated into the assemblage in several areas along the top and in the lower left corner, dated with the year '49 in the left corner, as well as annotated in the lower right corner. The photo montage is sealed with a Nat Mat Board backing, placed in the original 1949 Nat Mat board black surrounding mat. There is currently no frame. The photo montage measures approximately 9.25" x 12.1". With the mat, the entire piece measures approximately 16" x 20". The photo montage is in excellent original condition. Please review all of the detailed images as supplemental to the written condition report, for quality assurance.

Born Emmanuel Radnitzky, Man Ray was a prolific American avant- garde artist, photographer, and filmmaker, central to the Dada and Surrealist movements. Man Ray was known for inventing techniques such as the "Rayographs", (camera- less photos), and solarization. Man Ray pushed artistic boundaries in painting, film, and fashion photography, creating iconic works through chance and experimentation. He spent about a decade in Los Angeles in Hollywood, however, he spent most of his career in Paris.

Born in Philadelphia, Man Ray relocated to Brooklyn, and studied art in New York City. Inspired by the 1913 Armory Show, he rejected traditional art. In New York, Man Ray met Marcel Duchamp, and collaborated on projects such as "New York Dada" and the "Societe Anonyme".

Man Ray moved to Paris in 1921, where he established himself as a sought- after portrait and fashion photographer for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. At this time, he experimented with creating camera- less photos, ("Rayograms"), and solarization, (tonal reversal). He also became deeply immersed in Surrealism, making experimental films.

Fleeing Pariscduring World War II, Man Ray returned to the United States, and settled in Los Angeles, where he felt under- appreciated for his non- photographic work.

In 1951, Man Ray returned to Paris, where he focused primarily on painting, until his passing, in 1976.

A master of photography, painting, film, and art obect- making, Man Ray embraced spontaneity, influencing Dada and Surrealist aesthetics. He produced famous portraits of Lee Miller, Kiki Montparnasse, and many others, as well as surrealist objects. A major force in modern art, Man Ray shaped photography and avant- garde movements, globally.

Artworks by Man Ray are held in the permanent collections of major museums worldwide, including, but not limited to the Museum of Modern Art in New York, (MoMA), the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and the Centre Pompidou, in Paris.
