Original vintage antique Maynard Dixon, (1875-1946), watercolor painting of Ancient Junipers in the Desert. The artist's location was also written by the artist, verso, (in the Sonora Pass in California), as well as the notation, "For Whom the Bell Tolls", in the artist's hand. This painting was likely used as an illustration in a book by the same title, as the artist contributed many illustrations in books and magazines during the artist's career. The book by Hemingway was published in 1940; after which would give an approximate date of the painting, around 1940-1945. The painting is in good condition. There is a wrinkle/folding in the lower right corner, as indicated in the images. The painting is watercolor on heavy woven paper, measuring approximately 14" X 18", plus the vintage antique plein air frame. In order to preserve the artwork, the painting is not currently behind glass, and glass is not included.

Maynard Dixon was an American artist celebrated for his depictions of the American West. He dedicated much of his artistic career to portraying the landscapes and cultures of the U.S. Southwestern region from the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century.

Dixon played a significant role in promoting local modern artists through his involvement with the Galerie Beaux-Arts, a cooperative gallery in San Francisco. He married photographer Dorothea Lange and later painter Edith Hamlin.

Born in Fresno, California, Dixon moved to San Francisco in 1893 and studied under Arthur Mathews at the California School of Design. He developed a distinctive style influenced by his travels through various Western states, capturing the essence of the West in his artwork.

His career saw numerous exhibitions and contributions, including a notable display at the Panama–Pacific International Exposition in 1915. Dixon's style evolved over the years, shifting away from impressionism toward a more powerful and modern approach.

During the Great Depression, Dixon's work took on social realism themes, reflecting the challenges and struggles of the time. His marriage to Edith Hamlin and subsequent move to southern Utah further inspired his art.

Maynard Dixon passed away in 1946 at his home in Tucson. His legacy includes a rich collection of paintings, watercolors, pastels, drawings, poetry, and illustrations. His influence is evident in two museums dedicated to his work, as well as a documentary film and television program that explores his life and art.
