Michael James Andrews Original Vintage Modern London School Nude Composition Oil Painting
Original, vintage London School oil on canvas painting by contemporary Post- War British artist Michael James Andrews (1918-1995). The painting is a composition with a mannequin bust and female nude, with the female subject laying on her side. The painting is a very good example of the artist's technical precision and skill. The painting in very good condition, and measures approximately 24.10" x 30.8", sans frame. In frame, the entire artwork measures approximately 36.75" x 30.65". The painting remains housed in the original vintage frame, and is signed in the far lower right corner, lightly in the lower center, and lightly in the far lower left corner, with some notations by the artist, verso, on the canvas.
Michael Andrews was an influential British painter known for his thoughtful and technically precise work. Associated with the "School of London", which included Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud, Andrews was nevertheless a reclusive figure whose oeuvre is appreciated for its intellectual depth and emotional subtlety.
Michael Andrews was born and raised in Norwich, England, on October 30th, 1928, to a Methodist family. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, from 1949 to 1953, where his teachers included William Coldstream, Lucian Freud, and Francis Bacon. Andrew's talent was recognized early, earning a scholarship to the British School of Rome, in 1953. In 1959, the Tate acquired his student work, A Man Who Suddenly Fell Over (1952), a piece he later described as reflecting the fragility of one's sense of security.
Despite Michael Andrew's retiring personality and modest output, he is considered one of Britain's most important Post- War painters. His work is praised for its powerful observation and technical skill, with fellow artist Frank Auerbach calling his limited production a sign of genius and staring that Andrews "only ever painted masterpieces."
Michael Andrew's paintings are held in major collections, including the Tate (London), the British Council Collection, Pallant House Gallery (Chichester), Yale Center for British Art (New Haven, Connecticut), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), and the Getty Center in Los Angeles, among others.
