Post War, British Art Studio Bowl, by Bernard Leach. Commonly referred to, as the "Father of British Pottery", Bernard Leach's signature art glazes from his studio, are some of the most classically beautiful pottery pieces in the world. Japanese potter, Shoji Hamada, and Bernard Leach worked together for a time, in England, experimenting with glazes. Bernard Leach is, without a doubt, the best known and most prominent of British studio potters. His friendship with Shoji Hamada and his shuttling between Japan and St Ives are well documented.

This glaze is stunning. A technical marvel, the bowl is hand thrown, on a wheel, then a complicated shower of Shino glaze. This one has a "face". In Eastern pottery such as Hamada's bowls, you will see a face to present the person drinking from the bowl; it is a spiritual experience. This face has a Tenmoku glaze, with traces of greenish metallic Oribe glaze. Hamada and Leach worked together to bring a flair of Eastern Modernist Pottery to the West. Bowl shows magnificent technique; the mottling in the olive glaze is highly intricate, almost miraculous; the bowl is classically beautiful, with a highly distinctive Tenmoku face; highlights of Oribe, that reflect copper. This bowl displays as one of Bernard Leach's stronger works. Gorgeous bowl, from every direction, and angle, appears a little different. Pottery is dated '70; at a later time in Bernard Leach's career, where he was making the most brilliant glazes of his career. (At this time, sometimes a pupil would help to hand throw the vessel, so that Bernard Leach could concentrate on his outstanding glazes, which were inspired by the shape of the vessel). Forms of these bowls are well documented by Oxford University, and have been sold by auctions such as Christie's, and Cowan Auctions. Bowl glaze is also shown on several auctions by Cowan.

Bowl has Bernard Leach's mark on the bottom. Bowl is larger; measures at approximate 35" circumference, (around), at the rim, which is the widest/largest point, a 6" Height, approximately 8"W, from the side, approximate 5.5" diameter from the top. There is some chipping at the very bottom of the bowl, as shown; there are no other issues with this vessel. As a collector, this vessel is one of the most stunning and impressive pieces of pottery I have ever viewed by the artist. Studio pottery will be professionally packed, and sent with insurance, and online tracking, included in shipping quote.
