Mischa Askenazy Maurice Askenazy Original Vintage Ukrainian Post Impressionist California Still Life Oil Painting Doll & Porcelain Cormorant

Mischa (Maurice) Askenazy (1888 - 1961)
Mischa (Maurice) Askenazy was a post impressionist artist, associated with a movement of artists from the Eastern Europe/Ukraine region; (Sergei Bongart, Nicholai Fechin), that were active, and lived in Los Angeles, California. Mischa Askenazy is known for still life paintings, with dolls, figure/nude, genre, portraits, and Eastern European, as well as California landscape painting.
Maurice Askenazy was born near Odessa, Ukraine, on Feb. 22, 1888. At age four, Askenazy (né Ashkenazy), arrived in NYC; where he spent his childhood. Opting for an art career, he studied at the NAD under Jones, Volk, and Maynard; upon winning a scholarship, he traveled in France and Italy, for two years. During the 1920s, he averaged $50,000 per year as a portraitist, to the wealthy. A portrait commission brought him to Montecito, CA in 1925, and, charmed by the climate, he decided to settle in Los Angeles. He painted there until his demise, on July 13, 1961. His works, which show the influence of Cézanne, include portraits, figure studies, still lifes, and landscapes.
