Nancy Ellen Craig was a prominent American painter primarily known for her portraiture and large- scale surrealist oil paintings. Early in her career, she was a sought- after portrat painter for the "rich and famous", including Sean Connery, Frank Lloyd Wright, and membersof the Guiness family. Critics frequently compared her technique to that of Thomas Eakins and John Singer Sargent.

Later in life, Craig moved to Truro, Massachusetts, where she created mural- sized canvases in her barn studio. These works often drew inspiration from mythology, the Bible, and political subjects.

Nancy Craig's later works featured "dreamscapes" and surreal elements, such as giant shells and symbolic figures, often set against signature checkerboard floors.

Nancy Ellen Craig was born in Bronxville, New York. She studied at Bennington College and the Art Students League of New York. She spent much of her later life in seclusion on Cape Cid with her husband, the poet Preston (Pres) Carter.

Nancy Craig's life and "renegade" spirit are the subject of a documentary short "Daughter of Rubens", which explores her choice to prioritize her art, over traditional domestic life.

Nancy Ellen Craig was a recipient of the $20,000 Pollock- Krasner Award and the Audobon Artists Patrons Prize. Her work is held in prestgious collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the John Ringling Museum.
