Original vintage Russian American portrait of a Native American woman, seated, by Nicolai Fechin. Color and brushstrokes are extraordinary; from the tiny, thin layers of lines in the hair, to the lilting brushstrokes in the feathers, extraordinary details of tiny bits and slashes of color, through-out the face, and neck. Eyes are dark but very revealing, eyebrows striking in Nicolai Fechin's usual furrow and a somewhat brooding expression he has captured in many of his portraits. It appears the Native American woman is sitting in a teepee, under a blanket, with orange firelight dancing in the background. This is one of two portrait paintings by Nicolai Fechin found at an estate in Santa Monica; (the other, a portrait of an Arab man, that one signed with a larger F near the bottom). The Santa Monica estate also had two paintings by Leon Franks, (a pupil of Fechin's- that are also listed), as well as a still life watercolor painting by Sergei Bongart, (also listed); (Bongart, another artist local to Santa Monica that also studied with Fechin) Whereas the other portrait of an Arab man has a prominent F at the bottom, this painting has a couple of places that are ambiguous as far as signature and writing, near the bottom. Due to the lack of a clear signature's location, the painting is listed in the manner of/attribution to Russian-American artist Nicolai Fechin.

Nicolai Ivanovich Fechin (Russian: Николай Иванович Фешин; 26 November 1881 (Kazan, Russia) – 5 October 1955 (Santa Monica, California) was a Russian-American painter known for his portraits and works featuring Native Americans.
