Johan Jongkind Original Antique 19th Century Dutch Hague Vlaardingen Castle Netherlands Port Marine Landscape Fishing Boat Oil Painting September 1886
Extraordinary 19th-century oil painting of a Netherlands Port with the Vlaardingen Castle in the background, (The taller white building, with a triangular architectural addition on the roof), in the manner of Johan Barthold Jongkind, (1819-1891). The port city of Vlaardingen, Netherlands was the childhood home of Johan Jongkind, which at that time, only had an estimated population of approximately 6,000 residents. The palette is striking in the striking dark black shadow shading and contrasts against vivid red, with a cerulean blue sky. There is a figure walking along the shoreline, next to a red-trimmed, shored fishing boat with olive and black shading tones and a light lavender sail. There are marks on the reverse of the painting; possibly an estate stamp that is still partially visible, as well as a date in black wax, of September 1886. The painting is signed, lower right; "Jan Jo" is barely visible. The remaining portions of the signature are illegible. The brush strokes are the slight impressionist painted brush strokes of the precursor to French impressionism, leading the way to the premiere era of the French art school of impressionism. This is especially evident in the building in the distance, the sailboat, and the foreground. There is some crackle; most noticeable in the sky. There are also a couple of small flaws due to the crackle in the paint. Please review all images for details.
