Clarence Alphonse Gagnon is most prominently known for his rural Quebec landscape paintings, where he was born. Gagnon's color is extraordinary, and style is very strong in Post Impressionism. His works has lovely parallels to French Post Impressionists, such as Van Gogh.

Gagnon’s mother fostered his early talent for drawing, despite his father’s wishes that he enter business. The young Clarence Gagnon began studying drawing and painting in 1897, at the age of sixteen, under William Brymner, at the Art Association of Montreal.

Although he trained and maintained a studio in Paris for much of his career, he never lost his love of the Laurentians, and the Charlevoix region of eastern Quebec, which inspired many of his paintings.
These sketch paintings, a gorgeous landscape highly representative of the artist's best period, and works; of the artist's favorite subject; the Charlevoix region of eastern Quebec. Each painting is highly detailed, in fine sinuous lines, confident strokes; in extraordinary detail. When the frames were opened from reverse, an old Montreal Gazette from 1919 was found behind one of the paintings; and in the other, the Evening News, (Montreal), newspaper from February 4, 1915, was found folded and tucked in the back, on reverse.

Medium of painting appears to be crayon, on a type of black paper. However, on reverse of one of the paintings by this artist, it states "Pastel"; (appears to be a type of oil pastel). Painting is still in original antique frame, behind original wavy leaded glass, from approximately 1910. One of the frames had a chip about 1 inch in the corner, and was restored.

Due to lack of a clear signature, from pastel, the painting is listed as an attribution to Clarence Alphonse Gagnon. The painting is in original condition.

The painting measures approximately 7"X9.5", without mat, and frame. In mat and frame, painting measures approximately 11.5"X14". I would put the age at the painting at approximately 1913-1914. (This is one of two Charlevoix landscape paintings by Clarence Gagnon).
