Antique American precisionist abstract oil, (and possibly tempera), painting on canvas of the Petit Manan Island, Maine lighthouse; with a flat blue background. The abstract precisionist manner with undercurrents of flat cubism, reveals the painting to be an early painting in the precisionist school of artists that include Charles Sheeler, George Copeland Ault, Edward Hopper, Charles Demuth, and Ralston Crawford. Out of this group, the artists rendering lighthouses specifically as their (architectural) subject include: Charles Sheeler, George Copeland Ault, and Edward Hopper. The painting's provenance was in a barn, in Maine, for decades, before the latest acquisition. The flat blue sky background and clear block forms in the smaller buildings have much in common with Charles Sheeler's later works. The painting contains Charles Sheeler's palette of light mint green, with darker hunter green against blue, and sobering darker grey and brown, contrasting with highlights of the white palette. The painting's age is estimated at 1955, when Charles Sheeler vacationed in Maine, at the residence of Maine Modernist artist, John Marin.

"President James Monroe authorized the building of a lighthouse on Petit Manan Island in 1817. It served to guide shipping traffic toward several bays and harbors in the vicinity, and also to warn mariners of a dangerous bar between the island and Petit Manan Point on the mainland."
