Joseph Margulies (1896–1984) was an Austrian-born American painter and printmaker known for his portraits and seascapes.

Biography: Joseph Margulies was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1896 and immigrated to the United States at a young age. He honed his artistic skills at several renowned institutions, including the Art Students League of New York, where he studied under printmaker Joseph Pennell from 1922 to 1925. Margulies furthered his education at the National Academy of Design, Cooper Union in New York City, and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He also apprenticed with Maynard Waltner in Vienna. Notably, Margulies contributed illustrations to "The Masses," an American radical magazine edited by Max Eastman. Joseph Margulies passed away in 1984, leaving behind a significant artistic legacy.

Works: Margulies gained recognition for his compelling portrait prints and captivating seascapes depicting the rugged beauty of the New England coast. One of his notable pieces is "Gloucester Fisherman." His artwork can be found in esteemed public collections such as the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, the Library of Congress, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C., and the Yale University Art Gallery.
