William Keith
(1838-1911)
Europe, California Landscape Tonalism
Barbizon, Tonalism, Impressionist, White Mountain School, Hudson River School
Oil on Canvas; nails holding canvas to wooden stretcher bars
Painting is a fairly typical size for the artist, measuring approximately 17"X21", without the original frame; larger, in original antique frame.
Painting is all original. No overpaints, or restoration. The painting is in very good original condition. There is one chip, that is on the bottom, that has been uncorrected, as shown; in this image, to the left of the chip, are the initials "SF" in block letters; (San Francisco).
Painting is estimated to have been painted approximately 1905. Landscape is incredible, and holds a familiarity, albeit smaller, than William Keith's catalogued work, of Mt. Hood, from Hood River. This location was very popular for early California gold prospectors, as well as William Keith, Thomas Hill, Ernest Narjot, and many other early California artists, seeking to capture the quiet beauty, of the Western Region.
Painting is signed lower left; in the photo; it is in black, so is a little darker. (Please bear in mind that while in mint condition for being antique, this painting is still old, and therefore, dark; painting had to be photographed in bright light, to capture details and color, for viewing purposes, as the painting has not been professionally cleaned) There is no craquelure; the paint is completely stable. (Painting is in excellent condition, other than the small chip.)
William Keith's landscapes are very fine, and hold several influences of his mentors and predecessors, such as the Hudson River Painters. The artist became known as a highly influential artist in early California art, picking up very nice luminist landscape techniques; painting poetic, and very detailed, yet refined, striking, paintings of early California. Very rare, and gorgeous original landscape by William Keith. Please review all images.
