Original vintage winter impressionist landscape, by Russian- American artist, Peter Ilyen, (1887-1950). The subject is a winter landscape with the Annunciation (Blagoveshenksky) Cathedral built in 1554-62 in the Kazan Kremlin, in the artist's hometown of Kazan, Russia; to the upper left, in the background.

Peter Alexander Ilyen was a celebrated artist known for his portraits, landscapes, and murals. Peter Ilyen was primarily based in San Francisco, California.

Born in Kazan, Russia, in 1887, Ilyen demonstrated early artistic talent, sketching nature and taking private art lessons, as a youth.

Despite his artistic promise, tradition required the eldest son of an aristocratic family to attend the military academy, Peter Ilyen graduated from the Imperial Government Military Academy in 1909, but continued his art studies privately.

By age 18, Peter Alexander Ilyen was an accomplished artist in Kazan, and received several mural commissions. He also served on the Austrian Front during World War I, between 1914 and 1916.

In 1918, during the Russian Revolution, Peter Ilyen, his wife Nadine, and his brother Gleb, (also an artist), fled Russia forJapan.

After earning money by painting portraits in Japan, Peter and Nadine emigrated to the United States, in 1922, settling in San Francisco. He established a studio on Clay Street and focused on portraiture, and exhibiting his work around the Bay area. He was professionally known for his detailed portrait painting and California landscape scenes.

Peter Alexander Ilyen passed away in a San Francisco hospital, in 1950.
